Questions about kit during IAP and BOTC

Just wondering what a person is supplied with during each stage. Obviously, what you need for drill and field courses will differ greatly. So are you given it all at once, or just when it's required. Finally, what kind of prices are we talking about for other items?

Thanks a lot.

I am not an ex-IAP type, however I know someone who is going shortly and I reviewed this website for info.

Not the exact answer you are looking for, but its points in the right direction...

You can see each week, what you are doing and guess what kit will be required.

For what its worth, I only noticed 1 kitting-out timeframe, Wednesday, Week 1.

I would bet, perhaps incorrectly, that you get all your kit minus field kit, depending on your inspection layout and the School Standard on that.

Worst case scenario is you "will find out when you get off the bus".

A small help, but some help atleast  ;D

J_Muir,

I have followed your many posts about being a pilot in the CF with interest and now I see this one.  While I somewhat admire someone who gathers as much information as they can about the CF before making a decision I am wondering since you are not even eligible to apply as a DEO for about two years from now are we going to see all of your questions being asked again?  Especially if the information you have now changes by then.

You will either get a rifle or some ammunition - your buddy will get the other....

I hear ya! I'm actually drivin myself nuts because there is literally so much info on here and links to more info that it brings up even more questions - some very odd and tedious one at that.

Fortunately, I seem to have all the main points down now and can just focus on finishing up my last two years of university.

Not sure if you've responded to any of my q's on other threads, but if so, thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.

You can ask all the questions you want, there will always be more.  At this stage, asking questions about what kit you get and when is rather pointless......stop worrying about anything and everything.

Everything you need will be issued, just like everyone else in the CF. Don't worry, they take you by the hand and lead you though everything.
lol...thank god...

So all where is it you supposedly keep all this extra kit....that's been mentioned to be taken as doubles?  You can PM me if you like  ;D

To answer the question, you get all the kit at once; the combats all the other kit for the field, plus your dress uniform.  Incidentally, for the Navy types, this means we have about twice as much kit on diplay during inspection.  Lots of ironing.

But you really don't need any extra items, in fact there is no where to put it, and odds are you won't have any access to your suitcase anyway for the first month.  You get issued towels and everything too, so ignore the joining instructions (unless they get updated, they tell  you to bring a lot) and just bring 1 set for the first bit until you get your issued stuff.  Also, for the first couple of days before you get your issued gear, they'll have you marching around in civies, so make sure your dress shoes are comfortable.  Aside from socks and underwear, you only really need enough clothes for the first few days and the odd weekend.

When you do actually get there, if you do get the chance, pick up an extra pt tshirt and a few green ones.  If you get lucky, you can use those ones instead of raiding the ones in your locker that are nicely folded to 7x7.  Aside from that, maybe some good wool socks, and that should be really all you need.  It really isn't all that hard, depends a lot on the staff, but as long as you don't stress too much or take things personally (you will always get picked up for stuff on inspection and the staff are just doing their jobs) and just give'er for the 16 weeks the hard part is getting the civvie beat out of you.  :) The course content itself is pretty easy.

Not that you are going to need that anytime in the near future, but maybe this'll help someone starting in the nearer future.

Navy_Pete, sounds like you've got some (recent) experience at the IAP/BOTC thing.  Congrats and welcome to the Navy.  Just a hint and strong suggestion, now that you do have experience, fill out your profile.  It will help establish who and what you are, especially when you are posting information such as above.

Thanks NavyMich, I knew there was something else I was meaning to do.
