I can't see the pictures, or is that just my computer?

dude, you have WAY too much time on your hands  :cam:

Looks awesome though.

just, don't drop it out in the field, or you will never find it  ;D

That brings me to a question.

Has anyone noticed an increase in losing kit items that are CADPAT?  I mean, when you are out in the field, and you have something in your pocket, and you notice later that it is gone, you go back for it, but can't find it, because it just blends in too well. I had one of those map cases from Canadian Peacekeeper, that I had sticking out of my leg pocket, that got snagged out by some brush on an ex, and then, voila, I was out $35  >:(

I just hope that whoever (if anyone) finds it will give it back, as I had my name in it (yeah right, like that's going to happen)

So, anyone?

I guess that they've stopped teaching how to button all your uniform pockets these days   ;D

I know what you're saying man, I put my helo down all the time and can't find it again, f***ing grey helo and grey ship.

Seriously though, people have put weapons down and can't find them again and they're black.

Cheers

naw the stupid map case is about 5 inches too long for the pocket.   trust me, if i could have closed it I would have, this was the first Ex that I used it on.   The brush was so heavy that I was having to back through it, butt first, so that I didn't poke my eyes out, and the map case must've snagged on a branch or something.

pain in the butt, literally  ;D

Well thats obviously why they were going through the thick pointy brush.{straight ahead, men!} ;D

I kid you not. I know of one soldier who put their rifle down, looked at a map for 5 munites all dumb like (like people do when they are trying to fake like they know where they are and what their looking for) then when we went to mark away, they picked up a stick and carried it for 2 hours.

Skullboy that;s amazing work. Do you mind if i ask you how you did it?  Do you paint each little square by hand or is there some kind of template?  Looks professionally done to me.
Maybe a magic can of cadpat spray paint that comes out like that :)

$35 for a map case?

wow.. a ziploc bag with gun tape around the edges and the 'zip' part has always worked for me.. :)

But I also shell out the 75 cents to photo copy the map segments onto 8.5x11 pages for my civvie hiking so I don't ruin my origionals anyways..

LOL, Ghost, the corporal from your stroy is doing GD support for our and the other courses here. Ironically, most often seen at the weapons lockup...

From what I heard, they went back and were eventually able to find the weapon, right?

Two lost weapon stories come to mind. I was Pl WO for a TQ1/QL3 ( or whatever we call it now) Crse and one night as the Pl was prepping to go out on a fighting patrol the Pl Comd laid his FN (yeah I'm that old)  on the ground to come over and discuss something with me.

The CQ was in the area bringing up a hot drink and meal for the boys prior to going for their walk in the woods. Anyway he or his driver didn't see the rifle on the ground, because the good Lt had cammed it and it was dark. They drove over it.

It gets worse the OC was there too and saw the whole thing. The CQ and I decided to go fro a stroll because it was obvious the OC wanted to chat with the youg officer. :o :o

After I told to look at the bright side. We were doing FIBUA/MOUT/FISH whatever training next week and now we had a wpn that could shoot around corners.

Second one, I was instructing on a TQ4/QLB (Pl WO crse) and a friend from my unit was on it. During the final ex due to sleep deprivation or whatever he laid his wpn down in the boonies and of course couldn't find it. Well that was worth an RTU as far as the DS were concerned, but to make matters worse no one knew and he actually came up to me and whispered he'd lost he'd lost it and could I help him look for it before the DS found out. Poor guy was so out of it he forgot I was DS. I shook my head and walked off. His section mates found it a few minutes later but he screwed up a PO  a few days later and was RTU'd.

Hey it happens. I had an OC who we had to issue a pistol to because he kept laying his C7 down for assorted Ptes and Sgts to find. It shouldn't happen and I've never â Å“lost mineâ ? but I guess it's a testament to the cam job. Which to get back on topic here is, the photos of are outstanding. Kind of reminds me of the old Rhodesian cammed FNs (not the cam pattern but the overall effect).

BTW re missing map cases, try tying them (and any kit) to your body with a length of para cord next time. Or go with the Ziploc bag.

Looks amazing, I as well would like to know how you did that. Superior job done on that though, wow.

Thx to all for the compliments. :)

I custom cut templates from overhead projector film and traced out the patterns from actual CADPAT samples. It took me a total of 15 or so hours just to cut the neccessary templates. But they can be cleaned and reused many, many times.

I based coated with Khaki, then airbrushed the brown pattern, and then the dark tan pattern.I use Dark tan instead of the pale brown in the actual pattern to give a little more contrast. Most of the people who have seen this combination seem to like it better then the pale brown.

But when I have extra time, I want to do an M14 stock up in the Actual AR CADPAT with the pale brown.

This is all done using Krylon Camo System spray cans & Testors Military Model Paint with a matte clear coat.

My Temperate CADPAT M14 was painted the same way.

  Regards to all.

KISS - the ubiquitous rattle can spray paint out of any surplus store / supply chain can be used I've see some artists out there doing some nice looking camo; even a print brush or air brush can work too.  The original post pictures don't show up anymore, I would have like to see them.  Brownells (a mail order sporting goods firm) sells some 3M Teflon air-brushable stuff, also some in rattle cans which would do for filed apps.

For those willing to pay a little more for something a lot more durable there are some nice almost indestructable gun finishes out there but sort of hard to send your issue rifle out to these shops, don't know about the CAF but the Marine Corps tended to look down on one "misplacing his rifle" for a while.  But they might be ok for personal weapons for the "aftermartket" security / spooks out there that can do what they wish without regs getting in the way.

If your in Canada / US one place to look is your local archery shop, Bow Hunters seem to like to cover everything in camo for stalking, the local shop here has a special tank in the back that they have special film that goes over the top of a solvent, large selection of patterns, sad to say I doubt they've got CADPAT / MARPAT, but who knows in time...
They take bows, and rifles if you sweet talk them and lay them on the film in the tank, the item sinks though the film and the film clings to the item.  Pretty cool process.  And it would pretty much have to be bead blasted off.

Been a while since I contacted him, but there was a guy in the US, east coast area, WE Birdsong if I remember correctly.  His main job is Teflon coating special parts for US Navy Subs, but he also did firearms too as a side, it was about $100US for pistols, and $125-150US for M16 - M14 type rifles.  He did some real nice work.  Hopefully he's still doing it.  Not sure what his waiting list time is these days,  but it wasn't too bad then.

But lots of folks seem to be doing this these days.  Custom Rifle maker Robar is one such place that does this type of finish.

opps now the pics show up, impressive to say the least, great job!

Got a set of mounts/rings for that shooter yet?

I have of of those Rem. 20" Tactical .308's damn nice shooter, even with my "old fart eyesight".  I have a mount / ring combination made by Iron Brigade Armoury installed on mine, not cheap, but one rock solid Marine-proof unit.  IBA is a custom shop run by a former Marine, Norm Norman A. Chandler II Lt. Col. USMC Ret who was the OIC of one USMC Weapons Training Btn. / Scout-Sniper Schools. Retired and now makes fine rifles, damn nice rifles. His crew is a bunch of former Marine Rifle team armourers.

I've owned and shot the hell out of a lot of Remmington 700's over the years and never found a better scope mount.  Money may not buy happiness but it sure can buy some nice rifles that will put a smile on your face.

Give them a shout if your still looking, you won't be disappointed.

Pappy, I have the scope and rings for the rifle, but just need a base. The scope is a leupold M1 LR 3.5 - 10 illum. Mildot with TPS Steel 30mm rings.

I'm either going to go with a PGWDTI Tapered Picantinny base, or my machinist buddy is going to make me a Badger Ord. Style base.

The rifle pictured was a 26" barrelled  700 VS that I had cut down to 20" & recrowned.I also installed a Rooster33 ajustable cheekrest.

  Regards, SKBY.

Nice work Skullboy!

I like my Rem700 Tactical with it's 20" barrel, I've used some of the others, 24, 26, 28" length and find this 20" a nice compromise.  Granted the longer barrel lengths have their place....  But mine shoots 3/8" or less groups at 100m outta the box with no turning yet and factory ammo (Federal Gold Medal Match 168s or 175s) (granted the Tactical come outta the Remmington Custom / Police Shop).  Well it shoots that good when I do my part, damn rifle shoots better then me  ;D  I've fired it at longer ranges and it holds true, damn nice shooter.  And the 20" barrel sure makes it so very handy and maneuverable.

The IBA mount / ring combo I use and suggested has 20moa tapper.  I use a Leupold 3.5x10 30mm tube Long Range Tactical Mil-dot (USMC style dots - Premier Reticle)
Premier does a nice job.  Some newer scopes use lit reticles, with there needed extra batteries....  Premier offers a optional coating on theirs that when lit up with a flashlight it will glow just enough... for a hour or so each" charge"  not the answer for everyone, some like the battery powered ones.  KISS - keep it simple stupid.

Looks like that rifle of yours might be heading somewhere sunny and a tad bit hostile...  I highly suggest one of these little devils - KillFlash ARD (Other models available)

Sounds like you got it under control, fine job.
