Haven't even calculated the Corvette, arctic LHD, UXV's discussions into that either. On paper its looking good.

This project is moving so fast for its cost its kinda crazy. It was less than 4 years ago it actually was funded. It will probably be awarded this time 2026. Which is two years ahead of what the initial plan was. Insane (in a good way).

Is that not a pretty clear statement on the state of the world today, and the potential threats we may face?

I think it’s also a reflection of the sad state of CAF’s equipment, manpower (people power, nah) levels and preparedness

On here I've only read Halifax Tar speak directly about serving with him previously and he's comments were positive.

I have. I agree with Halifax Tar. I was his CERA on ALG for 18 months. He was a mission-focused go-getter with no tolerance for bullshit. He had a lot of time for the MSE department, more so than any other CO I’ve served under. As a department, we had a ‘splice the main brace’ under him at least twice on RIMPAC 2010 followed by a SOUTHPLOY. Then again, we earned it on that trip. We saved the deployment (his words to me directly alongside in Guatemala, but we were both a bit tipsy).

As to ‘not getting Army’ he had an Afghan tour prior to going to Cheyenne Mountain.

They are kicking around an idea. Given the lack of infrastructure in the arctic is it worth it for the RCN to have a ship that could provide such infrastructure for CAF operations year round. It would probably look like an icebreaking hull with LHD capabilities. Which is where the rumours of the heavy RCN icebreaker is coming from. It wouldn't be an armed icebreaker, it would be an LHD that could icebreak for itself.

The Army needs to buy in or the gov't needs to identify a need. Its a reach even for the future capability cell IMHO. Hands will be full just doing the corvettes, subs, Rivers, and hopefully two more JSS.

Stoker is correct, “we won’t be surfacing through ice pack.”

Before taking such a risk to the crew and boat; it would be prudent for the manufacturer to create a computer model of ice conditions and observe how the submarine model and ice model react to the other.

As I mentioned, the sub will only surface through the ice pack in an emergency and then will likely not be able to submerge again until repairs are made. If we are going to test them under an ice pack, then have icebreaker following with underwater comms who can open the ice if needed.

You could do it with a large ocean going ice strengthened LST. That ups are abilty to move men and equipment pretty much anywhere in the North during open water season. Base crew of 18 for this version. LST 120H - Landing Ship Transport | Damen

Likely not for ice breaking, but ice strengthened it should work.

My understanding is that what VAdm Topshee was thinking about is a platform that has an ice-breaking hull that can self-deploy without an accompanying ice-breaker.
