Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some updated information on the career progression for Infantry Officers in the CAF.

I’ve read several threads on this forum and other sources, but most of the detailed discussions seem to date back to around 2016–2017, and some of the terminology and timelines appear to have changed since then.

From what I understand, the early pipeline for an Infantry Officer currently looks something like:
  • BMOQ
  • BMOQ-A
  • Infantry Officer DP1 / trade training
  • Posting to a battalion as a Platoon Commander

However, I’m trying to get a clearer picture of what the current progression actually looks like, especially during the first several years.

Some things I’m hoping to better understand:

• Typical timeline from BMOQ to arriving at a battalion
• How long BMOQ-A and Infantry Officer training normally take
• Whether there are additional courses commonly done early in an officer’s career
• How long officers usually remain in Platoon Commander positions
• What the first 5–10 years of an Infantry Officer career generally looks like

My understanding is that promotion to Captain is generally time-based/automatic if performance is satisfactory, and that career progression becomes more competitive after that point. If anyone could confirm or clarify how that works today, that would also be very helpful.

Finally, what is the current Initial Service Obligation for DEO Infantry Officers, and when does the service clock begin.

I’d appreciate any current insight from those serving in infantry units or anyone familiar with the training system today.

Thanks in advance.
