Subject: RE: Reserve Medical Link Team

Dear Corporal Chartrand:

Thank you for your correspondence concerning the Reserve Medical Link Team (RMLT) program.

The RMLT has been a priority for me and the Chief of the Defence Staff.
As you may be aware, the RMLT was designed as a three-year pilot program that began in 2008 and finished in 2011. It is now in the process of transitioning to the Primary Reserve Field Ambulances under the name Field Ambulance Medical Link Team (FAMLT). Its roles and responsibilities are to:

* coordinate reservists' access to entitled health care through
the supporting Canadian Forces Health Services Centre;
* provide coordination and contact to all Primary Reserve members
returning from an international deployment (generally at six weeks, six months, and one year post-deployment);
* provide health care entitlement briefings to Primary Reserve
units of all three environments within their area of responsibility;
* provide liaison and follow up as necessary to all ill and
injured Primary Reserve personnel depending on the nature of the illness or injury (i.e., duty-related for Class A members);
* liaise with reserve units, headquarters, civilian health care
teams, and Canadian Forces clinics within their area of responsibility;
* be knowledgeable about reservist health care entitlements and
civilian health care resources within their area of responsibility; and
* promote the mission, vision, and values of the Canadian Forces
Health Services Group.

As you mention, the Special Report from the Office of the Ombudsman in
2008 entitled Reserved Care was an important factor in the establishment of the RMLT, and now its successor, the FAMLT. I am committed to ensuring that reservists suffering duty-related illness or injury will receive the same level of health support as their Regular Force counterparts.

I trust this information is of assistance, and thank you again for writing. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service in defence of Canada.

Sincerely,

Peter MacKay
Minister of National Defence
