The one useful thing with the Vet ID card is the Trusted Travellers line, which a CFOne card doesn't help with... having lost mine, I applied for a replacement card back in October, still haven't received the new one. I even uploaded the Certificate of Service or whatever it is that they said would speed up the process.

Just tried it on my work computer and it worked fine for me.

The form itself can be found in the FAQs under how to apply and it also worked for me.

I completely forgot I asked about this, and haven't been back to this site in a while. This second link worked for me, I appreciate it! I forget which site I was using, it was whatever VAC gave me when I called and asked about it.

The VSC (NDI 75) is not official government ID - it does not meet Treasury Board Secretariat guidelines. CBSA no longer recognizes it for use in the Trusted Traveler Line - nor should they. The NEXUS card involves a background check, and the NDI 20 implies you have an Enhanced Reliability screening at the least. There is no background check done to ensure that anyone who is issued a VSC has not committed any criminal offence since their release - for all they know, a veteran could have been cooking meth in the garage since their release. CBSA has made the right call.

Yes, I noticed that as well at my last airport trip. Can't remember the exact wording on the sign, but it clearly only included currently serving members for Verified Travelers.

In any event, I did get my new card about a month ago.

It seems totally reasonable to me that the veteran card would not get Verified Traveler status, but I had used it in the past whether that was an error by the person at the line or not, I do not know, and so I assumed it did. At the same time, the Verified Traveler line is talking about skipping a queue, it's not like they're skipping any security screening - so not sure Veteran vs. serving matters. The CAF doesn't kick people out for having committed a criminal offence, so not sure that point holds any water - and if they do, it can take eons to process.

Border crossings are a slightly different matter - the real benefit of NEXUS is skipping the queue at customs, and I believe NEXUS holders actually do get slightly less of a screening done. But being a Verified Traveler (veteran or serving member) never did get you through customs faster if I recall correctly.

Friend of mine who is a retired US military, still has a valid US military ID and his local Department of Motor Vehicles would not accept that as valid ID. Fun and games. Same up here, many government departments won't accept a PAL as ID, but a drivers licence, yea for sure.

To be fair, there's no guarantee that someone with a valid CAF ID isn't growing mushrooms or cook meth in the shacks.

True, but the level of scrutiny is (in theory) much higher on serving personnel. Somebody who released over 20 years ago? We have no way of checking on their background. If they want to use the Trusted Traveler line, get a NEXUS card. If they want 15% off at MEC, use a VSC or CF1 card.
