Joined the infantry reserves last fall, passed BMQ, but was recently RTU'd from my DP1 course after failing PW1 on a support weapon (C9/C7). Not safety-related. Couldn't get grouping size within the allotted attempts. For context, 8 of 25 on the course failed off for the same reason, so it seemed to be a common issue on our serial.
I'm relocating to a different city this fall for grad school and was hoping to transfer units. My chain of command says units in the new city have no capacity to take on untrained troops right now, and their suggestion is to release and reapply fresh once I'm there. The city I’m moving to is large with several infantry units (Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver).
Questions:
1. How common is it to fail PW1 on a machine gun for grouping specifically? Trying to gauge whether this is a normal hurdle or a sign I should reconsider infantry. Fitness/mentality-wise the course felt very manageable. I was one of the stronger C7 shots on BMQ and passed C7 PW1,2,3 on the first attempt, so up until now, I had not had any serious issues with marksmanship.
2. If I release now and reapply with a unit in the new city, will I have to redo BMQ, or does it stay valid for some period after release?
3. Any advice for navigating this? I really want to remain in the reserves and attempt DP1 again next summer. My plan is to voluntarily release now (rather than risk going non-effective/missing required parade nights at my home unit once I move) and reapply with a unit in the new city. But want to make sure I'm not missing something before going down this path.
Appreciate any input.
