Seniors Benefits Discussion- split from Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

How many of those homes in Europe are being used solely or mainly for AirBnB purposes? Having just put my pinky toe into the real estate market in the Montpellier area, I can tell you that ALOT of houses are taken out of the market because of the AirBnb craze. If these units were put back into the market it would alter the numbers of above.

Boomer looking for property in France... Fits the topic well ;)

Boomer looking to never experience snow again.

Housing costs in France (outside of Paris and the trendy parts of Provence/Nice) is substantially cheaper than in Canada. A 3bdrm 2ba house with a bit of land in the suburbs of Montpellier can be fairly easily found for under 500k CAD. That would be about 100k less than the average house in metro Halifax.

I find it interesting people will be such passionate Canadians and then run away at the sight of our most Canadian of characteristics which is the Canadian winter.

Look you do you. I see this like Carney, he's passionate for now. Wait until he runs back to the US where his family and business are after he has left Gov.

I've never like winter, even as a small kid growing up in one of the warmest regions of Canada, Windsor Ontario. I prefer warm weather, where I can be outside enjoying green spaces and warm water as much as possible. My British ancestors should have stolen some bread back in the UK before they booked passage to Canada and would have been shipped off to Australia for free.

Not looking to sell all and move completely out of the country, simply 3-4 months of the year when is dark, cold and depressing.

There was a guy who for a bit was comparing average Canadian home prices to literal castles in Europe… the castles were usually cheaper.

My plan is to work another decade and then FIRE and retire in a place like Northern NB and buy a beachside mansion. Houses in NB are ridiculously cheap for what you get, with property to boot.

#elbowsup am-I-right ?

Look I don't begrudge yours and others ability to spend winter months elsewhere. My desire to leave Canada completely is well documented on this site. Unfortunately I love a woman who wont entertain such grandiose ideas.

I just look with side eye at boomers who will be so staunchly Canadian yet want to live else where for long periods of time or completely. Think snow birds, and the likes of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Mike Myers. Passionate Canadians apparently but they don't want to live here.

Camps in NB are pennies on the dollar compared to NS. Good plan!

My family owns property on the Tabusintac River. I grew up there and want to move back. I wouldn't mind living near Shediac or Bouctouche either. Beaches there are awesome in the summer and winters are comparatively mild nowadays.

I am not a waterfront, oceanfront or beaches guy so its even more in reach. But too far away...

probably true for Canada as well. I know that there are hundreds available for short term rent in the Niagara area and all those unsold condos in Toronto were put up as potential rentals

Whatever it is, I highly doubt it accounts for a substantial part of a 27% difference.

BINGO!!

I said something similar the other day. Instead of one 3000 square foot house build three 1000 square foot houses....

Easier said than done.

Like I pointed out earlier, there's bifurcation in the market. Those who have family wealth build/buy bigger and bigger homes. Those who don't move to smaller and smaller condos, often paying rent to the parents of those buying the bigger homes. Feudalism 2.0.

And just to set the record - I'm a Gen X baby, just like you. No Boomer :)

Yet people are told CCB is enough to convince people to have kids.

100-500 a month isn't doing squat. It's nice to have when you have kids, but nobody is looking at that and thinking it's the determining factor of whether they have kids or not.

Im sorry to hear about your child, sounds like a rough go.
I don't think that you have actually used the calculator to back up your argument here. I just plugged some numbers in to see what the actual payments might be in a hypothetical situation. Here were my inputs:
Married couple - only one spouse working, earning 95K a year.
Homeowners in Ontario paying 4200 in property taxes.
4 kids, all under the age of 6.
Results equal -
Canada child benefit monthly amount $1,918.54
Ontario child benefit monthly amount $218.09

In total, including other eligible benefits equals $26,307.44 a year.

Now granted, the amount decreases as the children get older, but i can see where if someone runs their numbers through the online calculator, they might be encouraged to have more kids.

You think somebody making $95k can/will have 4 kids????

Sure, if by some accident they do, then maybe the $2k per month for a few years will prevent the kids starving once a week.

Not so sure about those numbers here in Canada. I was told by an Estate Agent (what is a Real Estate agent here) that in Nice alone there are upwards of 15,000 AirBnB units. Roughly 350k people live in Nice. If I remember the stats posted earlier, there is approx. 2.4 people per household in France. Take the 350,000 population and divide that by 2.4 and you get about 145,000 housing units for those 350,000. The AirBnB units represent a full 10% of the housing units removed from the housing market.

A doubt that there is a city in Canada with a population of 350,000 people that has a full 10% of its housing units being used strictly for AirBnB.

To put it another way - France had - 102 million - tourists in 2024/25, Canada had 20 million......

I think it is possible in some rural areas of Canada.

This forum loves outliers. I guess if we simply move 90% of Canada to rural areas, our fertility crisis will be solved. Easy peasy. Mao Cultural Revolution style. Just march em all out of the cities.

I actually don't even think in rural Canada most people would choose to have 4 kids on $95k per year. They may end up in that situation by accident or say events (job loss). But I seriously doubt it's that common. If you have 4 kids on $95k, you are barely keeping a roof on their heads and feeding them. You're basically raising the next generation of the impoverished at that point. Or fodder for the fentanyl crisis.

some do, yes without a doubt. and then there are the ones mentioned elsewhere that have provided significant amounts of cash so their kids and grandkids can enter the housing market. And for every parent who says no to advancing junior a student loan there are probably a couple or three that are shelling out 20 grand a year for schooling. I know my next door neighbour took out a mortgage after a decade without one to fund their daughter's school and a place to live. She bought a condo.

Yes, I do. Maybe not living in a downtown metro area, but in other areas of Canada? Why not?

I think that many of us on this forum, given our shared backgrounds and salary experiences assume that those around us have similar experiences. There are plenty of everyday Canadians who are earning family incomes much less than a single military salary, and getting by fine.

I have three kids. Up until our last move to Ottawa, which coincided with promotion and pay increases, our family income was only about 120K gross. We always owned, and always had 2 vehicles. There were times when money was tight, but we never went without the necessities.

It is all about personal choice. If a couple wants the big house, two luxury brand vehicles, vacations south every year, and fine wining and dining, then the affordability of kids may be impacted. That is a choice they make, but they can't be bitching they can't afford kids.
