Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes sues Liberal MP over errorneous statements that Doan called a referee a 'f***ing frog'.....

*****************************************************************

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan filed a lawsuit against Liberal MP Denis Coderre on Tuesday, claiming the former sports minister falsely accused him of making an ethnic slur against francophones.

The lawsuit seeks reparations for damages in response to remarks Doan considers "false and defamatory" made by Coderre. Doan alleges Coderre made damaging statements that were falsely attributed to him during a game between Phoenix and Montreal last month.

Doan found himself in trouble after Coderre, an MP from the northeastern Montreal riding of Bourassa, wrote to Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson. In the letter, copies of which were released to the media, Coderre asked Nicholson to expel the Coyotes captain from Canada's Olympic team unless he formally apologized for making an alleged ethnic slur against francophones.

During the Dec. 13 contest at Montreal's Bell Centre, referee Stephane Auger assessed Doan a 10-minute misconduct penalty after concluding he verbally abused an official and made culturally insensitive comments against the referees. Both referees and both linesmen for the game were francophones.

The NHL reviewed the allegations and Colin Campbell, the league's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, concluded that the allegation had proven to be baseless. The NHL did not take any additional disciplinary action against Doan.

Shortly after Coderre contacted Hockey Canada, Doan's lawyer sent a letter to Coderre, stating that the Coyotes forward considered his allegations to be "defamatory," and that his client would pursue legal action if no formal retraction was made within 10 days.

Doan, a native of Halkirk, Alta., has publicly denied the allegations and has always maintained that Coderre wrongfully accused him.

"Such remarks are completely incompatible with the values I espouse as both a hockey player and a proud Canadian citizen; and I reaffirm that I would never use derogatory language towards members of any community or group, including those who speak either of Canada's two official languages," Doan declared in an affidavit attached to the motion.

Doan is seeking $250,000 from Coderre, including $200,000 for moral damages and $50,000 for punitive and exemplary damages. Doan plans to donate to charity any and all damages he may be awarded.

Doan also wants Coderre to make a public retraction.

Coderre's accusation was the focus of the Dec. 23rd edition of Satellite Hotstove on Hockey Night in Canada.

"The NHL is tough on ethnic slurs ... if Mr. Coderre has any proof he should produce it. Otherwise he should just shut up," opined Globe and Mail columnist Eric Duhatschek.

"This is a politician that's grandstanding," said hockey commentator John Davidson, adding that, "a person shouldn't go stand on a platform and yell and scream about it when he doesn't even know the facts."

Coderre was on Sportsdesk tonight and his defense was "well, something was said to somebody"..........methinks Mr. Coderre is skating on the thin ice with this one.

So we'll believe a multi-millionaire trying to save his ass from being labelled as a racist... over a referee?

The referee's report said clearly that Mr. Doan said the comment he is quoted as saying. Now, Mr Coderre only noted the referee's report and, based on that, said Mr. Doan should apologize.

Why would someone have to apologize for pointing out that someone else did something wrong?

You must have connections!!! Since not even the papers/sportchannels have had a look at that, just where did you see/read it.....

The NHL investigated the incident and found it to be unsubstantiated. The NHL is not in the habit of exonerating it's players when there is any chance of wrong doing.

Even if the referee's report DID say that, the referee report is suspect as it it the complainant's statement. That is, the referees themselves are alleging the comment was uttered, so why take the referee's statement as fact?

What does Shane Doan's net worth or income have to do with his right to defend himself against slander?

Can you just stop one second and imagine the sheer outrage if it had been alledged he had said "eff-ing jew" or "eff-ing n****er"?

He'd have been crucified on the spot. But since he just insulted a couple dozen million people, with about 7 million in particular... I guess it doesn't matter, right?

Sean Avery of the LA Kings is alleged to have said exactly that (your second example) to a black player. I think it was Georges Laroque (sp?) of the Edmonton Oilers. No crucifixion occurred, I'm afraid. Just an investigation followed by I believe a fine from the NHL.

"Allegedly insulted" and he was exhonorated.

"Truth, Duty, Valour...Not Getting Caught" indeed. I'm glad my time left in the CF is short enough that I won't be faced with having to shoot you "pour encouragre les autres."

So not only do you not have a sense of humour, but you're also threatening me over an opinion I emitted on a forum? I sure am glad I'll never have to lead you.

I think youre overlooking the most important fact that, like another poster already said, the people that matter; the NHL already investigated this and concluded no disciplinary action needed to be taken.

But what do they know about their own sport/players/referees?

Wow. That's funny. An OCdt lecturing a Sr. NCO (WO I believe) on leadership. What are you going to do next? Lecture him on how to conduct a raid?

I guess you missed the part in your extensive military training where they point out to young OCdts that although a 2Lt. (you haven't achieved that lofty rank yet) outranks a WO, it is a mere technicality, and great care and attention should be paid to listen to them, respect them, and above all, don't piss them off. Of course, if you could learn to take a joke, you probably wouldn't have opened your cakehole and inserted both feet. That was quite a feat (pun intended) considering how far up your dirtchute your braincan appears to be.
