Soldier admits to knowingly infecting sex partners with herpes
OTTAWA — A Canadian soldier and Afghanistan war veteran who infected two women with herpes has pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Master Cpl. Mathew Wilson, 36, admitted Friday he had unprotected sex with the women he met on online dating websites between 2005 and 2009 without telling them he had the sexual transmitted disease.
Wilson told one of the women he was infected with the disease following their first sexual encounter. Wilson waited six weeks before telling the second woman he was infected, according to an agreed statement of facts.
Wilson also admitted he had protected sex with a third women about 10 times in 2009 without telling her he had herpes and after he told her he wasn’t suffering from any sexually transmitted diseases.
She learned Wilson was infected from another person, but didn’t contract the disease.
All three women said they wouldn’t have had sex with Wilson had they known he had herpes. However, the two women Wilson infected both continued to have sex with him even after he told them he had the disease.
Wilson became emotional and told the first woman he was sorry after she contracted herpes.
Wilson, who was diagnosed with herpes in September 2004, knew that he could transmit the virus to people he had sex with. There are more chances of transmission during an outbreak of the disease, but the infection can be transmitted even while there is no outbreak.
Wilson pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. A sentencing hearing was set for Feb. 7.
Wilson was originally charged with aggravated sexual assault in relation to allegations involving six women, but those charges are now expected to be withdrawn. Following his arrest, Wilson was released on bail on conditions that included he have no sexual relationships without disclosing his infection.
Wilson, who is also facing charges of possession of child pornography, is set to stand trial on those allegations on Feb. 26.
