Considering the Council (industry-funded, voluntary & self-regulating - more from their "About Us" page here) covers (at last count) about 760 TV & radio stations (check them all out here, here and here), any ideas on how they might "actually watch the news to ensure compliance"? Easier said than done, methinks ....except they could actually watch the news to ensure compliance instead of waiting for a filed complaint which generally means any corrective measures are too late
The number of complaints seem to ebb & flow from year to year according to their pageunfortunately it seems within their mandate they can't act without a complained, heres an example from last year
