Hey, This is my situation. I failed on my part to right down on trade choices for Medical Technician. It was also due to the fact I did not have my grade 12 biology and chemistry. My goal in life is to become a Fire Paramedic which for some reason when talking to my school counsellor when choosing careers failed to tell me i needed such courses (i am a graduate).

Anyways now enlisted and my medical completed would it be best to finish my BMQ then discuss taking these two courses.
OR
Do them now...  In which would i have to go through the whole process again?... I know i would have no problems at all with them either.

Its not that i don't want to be an infantry soldier... The fact is i know what i want to be the rest of my life which would be either Paramedic or Firefighter and would think my time in the army would be better spent being trained for something i can take out to civy life and enjoy while in the army if i even want to leave the army.

Thanks In advance.

Talk to your recruiter. I know for me I spent 6 years in the infantry then LOTPed (basically means I applied for and was excepted for another trade) to medical assistant (now medical technician). So I spent 6 years in the infantry, and the next 18 as a medical assistant / technician. retired last summer. i found that the 6 years in the infantry prepared me / gave me an edge on my TQ3 / basic medical assistant course: eg; discipline / leadership skills / confidence etc.

Again, talk to your recruiter. I believe now one requires certain high school courses.

Well I don't understand why you think you failed by not "right" down Medical Technician when you didn't even have the minimum requirements to begin with.  Do your time, get the two courses, and then try for an OT to Med Tech.

Ya. About that not having the two required courses... the only course you are REQUIRED to have it Bio 12, with a perefered secondary science in either chemistry or physics. Now. For the longest time, we have locked the trade down to only hiring PCP/Clinicians, which means that your application for off the-street into MedTech trade is some what outta luck. That being said, many of us are fighting that rule and leeways have appeard! *YAY!*. Take kincanucks and xo31@711ret's advice and get your foot in the door first. During your wait, I would also suggest that you look at taking your EMR/PCP course. You said you wanted to be a paramedic/fire fighter, well get to it. When you've got your two courses, and your EMR/PCP you'll become a more competetive applicant. Believe it or not, the CF is still a job. Another words, you're competing with everyone else who wants a job like MedTech. Good luck.

I see two clear paths...become a med tech and be a slave to the military
OR
Become a Paramedic of Firefighter and then CHOOSE the military
recruiters will tell you how glamorous it will be
but once you have the paycheque it will be hard to go back to school
think of your own best interests.

Thanks for all the advice. Yea I'm thinking of doing 3 years of infantry... From their ill move onto Med Tech/Firefighter. Considering I'm only 18 the more behind me the better.

Last I heard, that was only a problem in the PRes, not the Reg Force, since I still see the School here crowded with baby QL3's getting ready for JIBC or Ahunsic for their PCP courses.  My advice is if you're going Regular Force, carry on with your enrollment, take what you like out of what they offer.  If you want to be a medic, pick up your sciences by night school or correspondence and then remuster.  If you're looking at the Reserves, MedTech's advice is pretty sound too.

Good luck.

MM, I assumed that he way applying for the Reserves  :)... but I guess it's true about assuming :D hahahaha.
