Taking care of a terminally ill parent

Im looking for information in regards to leave options for taking care of a palliative parent. I understand there is compassionate leave, but its capped off at 14 working days from CO, and 16 calendar days from the Brigade Commander. Is it possible to have a caregiver type idea of leave? Or is it possible to take LWOP and go on EI?

If you were to take 14 days of compassionate to care give and then returned to duty, are you entitled to 14 more if needed when the person passes on?

Thank you in advance, if you know of any sites I can reference it would be appreciated. So far I havent found much, except EI refrences, and the QR & O's on Comp leave.

How about asking your SSM and/or OR they might be able to help.

That is a good idea, but Im currently on leave on the other side of the country, and if possible would like to find references so I can read up on them myself.

I'd contact the unit if for no other reason than to make the CoC aware of the potential need to deal with such a situation.  My thoughts go to you and your family --  palliative care is not an easy thing to do, especially for someone you love.  Let your unit help you, that's part of their duty.

If you want to do some additional research, DAODs and QR&Os can be accessed from this page too. However, I wholeheartedly agree with Good2Golf - you unit needs to know what you're dealing with - there are supports in place when we need the serious stuff - trust me, I know first hand.

first the bad news - there is zero entitlement to compassionate leave for any reason - it is totally up to the approving authorities rather they grant it or not. Also compassionate is always calender days not work days no matter who is approving.

Good news is that unit CO's have been encouraged to provide as much reasonable assistance to mbrs as possible.

Some info that most mbrs miss:

CO's can approve up to 14 days compassionate at one time - this means the CO could approve you for 14 days, after that is up you could then request another period of 14 days which s/he could again approve. This is totally dependant on your CO and how accommodating they want to be.

For a single period longer than 14 days it will take a higher level of command and they can approve up to 30 days in one period.

Doesn't take much to realize there is lots of possible options and combinations that can be done IF the CO and IF the higher auth are willing to play ball. example - CO approve period, then higher approve a period, repeat (seen done without the higher auth repeat)

Of course it all comes back as previously suggested to talking to your unit, advising them of your situation, presenting a plan of action and finding out what they will do for you.

Depending on your sit other options may be to ask for a compassionate or QOL posting that would place you in the area with your parent to help care for them.

Call the Duty Center and get in touch with the RCD Padre. He'll be more than happy to give you some help.
