KABUL, Afghanistan -- The U.S.-led coalition accused the Taliban of using children as human shields during a battle in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, while NATO said it was investigating a shipment of weapons intercepted near the border with Iran this month.

The fighting in Uruzgan province began when more than 20 insurgents armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars attacked a joint Afghan and coalition patrol Wednesday morning, the coalition said in a statement.

As a coalition aircraft prepared to bomb the site, "coalition forces as well as the aircraft identified several insurgents in one compound using children as human shields," it said. Ground forces and the aircraft withheld fire to avoid injuring the children. It was impossible to independently verify the coalition allegations.

The troops fought Taliban trying to flee the compound, and more than a dozen suspected militants were killed, the coalition said. There were no reports of casualties to troops or civilians.

International forces have come under heavy criticism for causing civilian casualties during airstrikes on suspected militant locations. President Hamid Karzai has pleaded with foreign troops to coordinate more closely with their Afghan counterparts to prevent villagers from being hurt, and the number of civilian casualties has dropped recently.

Also Wednesday, a NATO spokesman said the coalition was investigating a weapons shipment recently intercepted by troops in Farah province near the Iranian border.

"Although we know that it came from the geographic area of Iran, there is no definitive indication that it came from the Iranian government. We're still evaluating what is contained in that shipment," spokesman Maj. Charles Anthony said.

Agreed, weak!

But remember, they don't think like we do. We value life, they value death just as much, as thats what makes us different for starters.

Thats what I leaned first hand in Iraq, where kids were used as tools in the most sickest ways.

Get used to it, get over it, I have.

Wes, preaching to the choir bro.  I still sleep good at nights...just to bad that some of the weakminded folks back here in the "world" didn't get it.  If only they saw it first hand.  Unfortunately it is a losing battle that we fight (with people back here) because many of them will never truly see why we do what we do because we do what we do.  Rock and a hard place.

Keep your powder dry!

We avoided kids at all costs. Kids = distraction, sniper lures and IEDs.

The EN knows our weaknesses, and uses this to their gain.

He also frequents this site, and reads this too.

We ran into this in a big way in VN...like you and yours we got to the point we did not allow kids close, but you lose part of the hearts & minds war in the process.

You are so right.  The joys of the internet.  They are not a stupid En...in fact they are very smart and have no qualms about doing what they feel is needed to win their war.  We ran into a lot of kids.  Usually that was a good sign and one had to pay attention to all of the indicators out there.  Many times, we would keep the kids away however we could.  We dealt with the fighting and let the reconstruction ppl deal with kids and locals.  It creates less confusion for the soldiers and the locals.

These wars that we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are truly learning wars for both sides.  We need to create the right balance of security and hearts and minds in order to win these ppl over.  As to how you do that, I have my ideas at the Pl and Coy levels, but I try to leave the larger scale stuff to senior members in the CofC.  I feel if the Pl does it's part, then it is a start and it goes up to include all levels of the force that is over there.

Great conversation, good to talk to others who have an extensive experience base to draw from.  That is the only way that my generation of Officers and Soldiers will learn and make the right decisions vice the bad decisions.
