Hearing some educated wishing that he brought himself to be arrested in some sort of asylum seeking effort. Charges include supporting terrorism, drugs, and human trafficking.

This is pretty big. Telegram is… Ugh. There’s such an incredible amount of awful stuff freely distributed on there. Child porn and sexual abuse, outright terrorist propaganda and incitement of hatred, all kinds of various criminality… It’s a widespread safe-haven service for some of the worst of humanity, and being Russia-based, they absolutely do not cooperate with western police. I’ve also read repeatedly that it’s used as alternative comms for coordinating a lot of Russian military action in and around Ukraine. If nothing else, his arrest is gonna rattle a lot of really shitty people.

The theory about some sort of potentially covert cooperation is an interesting one. It was certainly super reckless for him to fly through Paris, and I struggle to think he didn’t know that.

This one bears watching.

I’d wait out on this one… I’m starting to lean a bit more towards this being a deliberate play on his part. It just seems incomprehensible that he would fail to avoid this if he wanted to; it’s not like he didn’t know he faced jeopardy. There’s a distinct possibility of a massive intelligence coup.

Even if we never learn a single thing further, simply shattering Russia’s confidence in the security of the Telegram app and its associated cryptocurrency architecture is quite disruptive to a bunch of bad actors in at least the short term.

But yes, even in just the straight criminal realm, Telegram is horrible.

My first thought when I read the topic header was "Why would France arrest the head of an English newspaper ?"

(Yes, I now know it's The Telegraph) Sigh,...sometimes it hurts being stupid......

Based on that, I suspect he'll be more than OK passing on any RUS "diplomatic officials" having access to him, am I right?

As a French citizen in French custody he has no consular rights to representatives of any of the governments of his other citizenships.

He’s likely safer now…unless France lets the FSB ‘MBS’ him in the consulate…
