In an effort to reach the goal of 355 ships, the CNO is looking at unretiring 7-8 Perry class frigates and extending the service life of the Burke class DDG's. The USN has a manning problem and getting the man power to crew the Perry FFG's wont be easy. The plan is to put 150 officers and men on each Perry. How much money will be needed to modernize these old ships ? I am all for it maybe as ASW platforms.

Studies are underway to “take a hard look” at putting eight mothballed Oliver Hazard Perry frigates back into service as well as extending the life of existing Arleigh Burke guided-missile destroyers to help the Navy reach its goal of a 355-ship fleet, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said on Tuesday.

Speaking before an audience at the U.S. Naval War College, Richardson said service leaders were looking at “every trick” to put more platforms into the fleet including bringing back some Perrys into service.

Certainly tells you what the US Navy thinks of its LCS program if they are thinking of bringing the Ol' Square Pegs back on line.  [:D

If Wikipedia is to be believed the Royal Australian Navy upgraded 4 of their Adelaide (FFG7) class ships under project SEA 1390.  The project extended their service lives and the project included improvements to the combat and fire control system, the sonar suite, and the air defence missiles.

After the refit, the ships are capable of firing SM-2MR and RGM-84 Harpoon missiles from the Mark 13 launcher.[8] An 8-cell Mark 41 Vertical Launch System for Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile has also been installed forward of the Mark 13 launcher.[8] The Phalanx CIWS was upgraded to Block 1B,[verification needed] and the torpedoes, missiles, and other ship-mounted weapons were upgraded.

Cost was budgeted at A$1 billion and ended up at A$1.46 billion.  Expensive for a 10 year life extension. Expect that much would depend on the current shape of the Perry’s still floating and the amount of upgrades the US Navy desires.
