The CC-130-J Hercules Merged Thread

The RCAF will soon start to experience the real problem with its current and future fleets when it comes to obsolescence. The old Hercs were mostly mechanical, and we trained great techs who could fix them when they broke. The Js, the '17s, the '49s, and everything new we bring in from here on out will end up grounded not because they are mechanically unsound, or aren't airworthy any more, but because their electronics and comms will become obsolete to the point the aircraft will just sit in the equivalent of limp mode. This will happen because we don't like to expend funds on upgrading until 6 months after its too late. Or manufacturers will stop supporting the tech, so that the newer versions can be sold.

And then there's 'waiting for chips' ;)
 
With Canada cozying up to Europe the A400m may be a likely replacement for the J models.

They're standing up a force protection trade, maybe we should offload transfer the TAPV to them for airfield defense.
I suppose you could always bury them in the ground as fortified strong points around the base perimeter.
At least that way you wouldn't have to worry about them rolling over.

Why don't we send them all back to the shop and have the identified issues fixed? Deal with the near term threats to life and limb (road-worthiness) and then limit their use in higher threat environments in accordance with their capabilities. They were never going to work everywhere on any event.

At least make them useful domestically.
