The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

Now, almost four years later and not a single legally owned firearm has been confiscated under Trudeau's "Assault Style Firearms" ban, but a bit shy of $42 M has already been spent

In addition, the CSSA stated in Committee that not a single Canadian sport shooter has been granted a handgun acquisition exemption under the new C-21 rules.

This is working out so well.

I'm very interested to see how far PP will walk this stuff back, or if he will at all. I tell you, he better.

With a Liberal dominated Senate, I don't think he'll be able to. And I'm willing to bet there will be new LPC Red stained Seante appointments before the next election to stymie and CPC bills, should PP win.

Solid point I didn't think about. I thought the LPC got rid of all their senators, lol, aren't they all "independent" now ? ;)

Yes, “independent”. 😉

I stand to be corrected, but I didn’t think an OIC needed Senate approval?

OIC's no. But government bills, yes. Currently, the new gun laws have "no reversal" clauses. Once prohib, always prohib. I don't think an OIC can reverse that.

Was thinking more the confiscation, but ack. Legislation for change, and depends how many “independent” new Senators the current Government appoints between then and 20…err possibly 27 October 2025.

The Senate refusing to pass a bill from the HoC is as unlikely as the GG refusing to give it Royal Assent.

Even dyed-in-the-wool LPC Senators are smart enough to understand they can't stop a piece of legislation if the HoC pushes it.

Did you watch the C-21 Senate hearings? Every single amendment which would've supported lawful sport shooters and target criminals was voted down.

So, when a future government pro-gun bill goes to the upper chanber the Senators propose and pass a ton of anti-gun amendments which destroy the spirit and intent of the bill. It goes back to the HoC where it doesn't pass third reading.

Then it goes back, and the CPC loudly explain to voters that their wishes are being thwarted by an unelected body...

Senators, not being compete idiots, and wanting to ensure their gravy train stays on the tracks will fall into line.

Again our system of GGs and Senators continues to impress me with their usefulness.

Money continually well spent.

Theoretically they could be very useful, we just haven't used them that way, so by custom they are useless.

I'm all for an apolitical GG appointed by the King, and a senate that takes their job seriously, but we don't have either of those things.

Agreed on all accounts.

If they worked I'd have no gripe. But they don't. So IMHO we fix them or ditch them. Because right now they just drain us for tax dollars as I see it.

Triple E Senate - you know like an equal number of senators per province so the tyrants in Toronto don't get their way all the time.

And make it small, like 3 per province. No need for hundreds. And make them a random draw of the Canadian population, with a selection process, who file an income of less than 100K per year. Set them on a 5 year term.
