ERT in the OPP Emergency Response Team; not a SWAT team, but rather think of them as a platoon of cops trained to work in a large group for coordinated things like searches, armed containment etc.

Some other police services use ERT to refer to their tactical teams, so it can be confusing.

Had to watch MSM news reporting last night, up playing the need to review Canada's gun laws, seriously downplaying the Trans component. They are trying to do the minimal talking about mental health and will soon turn it to gun control, as that avoids uncomfortable and potentially expensive and difficult solutions in the mental health field.

I expect the whole mental health field in regards to Trans issues to get turned on it's head, with these shootings and the successful lawsuits in the US by people that were "transitioned" when they were teens and now regret it. When the professionals realize their necks will be on the chopping block, they are going to "revise their findings" pretty quick.

So on the gun control component.

1) handgun transfers have been illegal since before this person hit 18 so it could not have been legally acquired to begin with for them.
2) they did not have a PAL either so the long gun could not have legally been theirs.
3) whose firearms were they, where they legally acquired at some point or were they always illegal.
4) what is a ‘modified handgun’ is it a sawed off rifle? A handgun with a magazine capacity above 10rds? A glock with a full auto switch?
5) a long gun is a pretty broad classification which could be anything from a muzzle loader to a AK-47.

More infomation is needed. What is fascinating to me though is both Wendy Cukler and the pro-firearms groups are on the same page that our laws already have all the legislation needed to deal with this, simply balls were dropped somewhere in the process.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

That is a pretty niche gun. I know there was a Canadianized version, but they have been Prohibited since 2024.

If it was a Vector, it raises some interesting questions about that household.

I saw an SKS in the picture of the gun safe. I don’t know if it was used, but I can see that becoming the government’s next target.

The SKS was always going to be banned eventually. IF an SKS was used in this killing AND/OR in Kitigan-Zibi (a first nations community) it's done.

The issue is not whether the shooter was trans.

In my mind the issue is giving back deadly weapons to a woman who has a child with a known mental health and has interacted with the police more than once. Why was this allowed to happen? I understand it was a "judge" who allowed this.

Do they have knives in the house? A car in the driveway? Anything can be a weapon in the wrong hands.

Access should be limited but if the owner has taken proper steps to prevent access what more can be expected? We need more information before making a full judgement on the decision.

The whole restricting access to firearms for people with mental health issues compounds the issue. As much as it sounds good on paper it can also work against the goal by causing those with issues to not seek treatment.

I am surprised the shooter had a youths PAL though considering the police calls.

Social media has a photo of a gun safe showing a previously NR KRISS Vector beside a SKS, and a "tactical" shotgun.

The family were gun people, so it's not that odd that they would have some different firearms.
