When you're being threatened by people driving up to you and waving around guns, you don't have time to do an in depth analysis to determine if it's airsoft or a real gun. So, criminals use them to intimidate, and when stopped by police they don't have real guns on them.

BC's new laws seem to be target at that sort of behaviours, though I suspect people doing innocent things will also get caught-up in the mess as well.

This act also puts a big chill on getting kids to handle air rifles and such. I don't see gangs using churches to much, but it may make it more difficult for Cadet programs to run air rifle ranges in churches and schools which they rent space from.

The ‘and property used to provide child care for which a licence is required under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act’ part is a large red flag for me.

Doing a very quick google search anyone running a home daycare with more than two kids not your own needs to be a part of that. So if my wife runs a daycare out of our home for say 3 kids I can’t own firearms, no matter how well secured and far away from the situation they are.

Replica firearms are already illegal, however even just reading my local police beat airsoft or bb pistols are very common for criminals to hold and threaten with, and since they are firearms they can look like firearms, they aren’t ‘replicas’.

That all being said it doesn’t change the criminals in any way. This same government is the one who fueled the drug crisis in the province with their ‘legalization experiment’. I don’t trust they have a single clue as to what is needed to actually deal with crime in the province.

I didn't take a detailed look at this legislation yet, but at first blush there appears to be come overlap with existing Crim Code offences such as using an imitation firearm (s. 85) and possession for a dangerous purpose (s. 88). More later after work.

Take a look at this Indictment. It’s very probable these 3 were attempting to smuggle the firearms into Canada for a more sinister purpose than regular drug crimes.
In particular, what border crossing were they heading to and how did they plan to get the weapons across?

Amnesty extension



The Government of Canada has just announced an extension to the firearms amnesty period, now set to expire 90 days after the Supreme Court of Canada delivers its decision on the appeal of the 2020 assault-style firearms ban.

While this extension provides continued protection for responsible firearms owners and businesses, it also prolongs the uncertainty facing our community.
The Canadian Shooting Sports Association urges all members to stay informed and be prepared as the legal process unfolds.
We remain committed to defending the rights of lawful firearms owners and will continue to advocate for fair, evidence-based policies.

As posted above, the amnesty for lawful owners of assault style firearms has been extended yet again but the program is still alive.

This tells me that the GoC expects to win in the SCC.

Until then, collection and disposal operations will continue and will likely accelerate to ensure as many firearms as possible are destroyed before the SCC could reverse the bans.

Most crime guns traced by RCMP came from within Canada, internal reports say

The vast majority of crime guns traced by the RCMP to identifiable sources in 2023 and 2024 came from within Canada and were not smuggled from abroad, say internal reports prepared by the national police force.

Report seems to appear on the "completed ATIP requests" for PS Canada - will share when I get a copy.

Wonder how soon we'll see ATIP/equivalent requests for similar reports from ON & QC?

Interesting take (or add-on nuance?) compared to the "all those illegal firearms flooding in from the U.S." narrative.

So one third could not have their source tracked. Of those sourced, handguns make up one quarter. Two thirds of sourced handguns were smuggled into the country.

The elephant in the room is the one third that could not be tracked.

Correct. From the article:

The RCMP centre defines crime guns as firearms that were used or suspected to have been used in criminal offences, guns whose serial numbers have been obliterated or altered, firearms that were found but not reported lost or stolen, and replicas, toys, 3D-printed guns, pellet or air guns that have been used in criminal offences.
