The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

So, if not Gripen, what would be a good choice for a second fleet for roles that can be achieved more economically with a less-than-exquisite aircraft? Acknowledging the political realities, are there any good non-U.S. options?
South Korean KF-21..new design and except for the engines* it uses parts designed and produced in South Korea. The plan is to upgrade aircraft resulting in a 5th Gen stealth aircraft. South Korea is also looking at the possibility of producing EW variant similar to the EF-18 Growler.

* South Korea is currently developing their own engine to replace the F414 currently being used.

That's interesting... Looks a bit like a poor mans F35.

would they still be willing to talk to us?

Base Borden already belongs to you so you don't have any jurisdictional problems although it certainly could use a layer of asphalt.
Borden would need a lot more than "a layer of asphalt".

Does the Air Reserve currently have any pilot roles?

Maybe once we figure out how to staff the Reg RCAF to fly and maintain the aircraft we are already committed to buy we could figure out how to do it on a Reserve basis.

Borden, Edmonton and Shearwater are all equally ready for fixed wing aircraft operations.
As in would cost billions to get up to status? Even the JAS39E you nee FOD teams canvassing the hell out of road before use. You need lightening, navigation aids, ammo storage, fuel storage, hangers that are secure plus the personal. It is not as simple as arming a bunch of OV10 to blink at drones now. Even OV10 like aircraft would be expensive as hell to work out.

Edmonton has a bunch of buildings literally on the runway. Shearwater has permitted residential development on the approaches.

My tongue in cheek point was that the bases are unready and unable to support fixed wing operations.

I think any new fighter squadrons would be pretty well limited to Winnipeg and Trenton but that raises questions of infrastructure since neither are set up to house large nunbers of fighters. Would probably need a new base, maybe alongside more quiet airports. CFB Yellowknife/Whitehorse/Saskatoon maybe?

Trenton lacks space for fighter squadrons; and I suspect Comox and Bagotville will quickly educate us about the significant problems of TS military facilities in shared use mil/Civ airfields, making Winnipeg less appealing.

A greenfield facility - say a new CFB Wadena, with Wayne Eyre as the newest RCAF HCol - would be easier.

A very small part of one runway. The second and austere runway still active. They did a trail run of fix wing (C-130) aircraft last past summer.

Blocking the end of the main runway. Rendering it entirely unusable.

Hercs are tactical lift. Not strategic.

The abject stupidity of ADM IE in building where they did makes me want to limit officers of the RCE to the rank of Colonel for a generation or two to correct their stupidity.

they are 30 years old maybe its time to re-locate them. That was the dark ages with Chretien and David Colonette.
