The Unintended Consequences of Diversity Statements

Is it, or is it being a sore loser that can't face the people they assumed the worst about because they disagreed on politics?

Throwing away family because you don't agree on politics is a pretty smooth brain decision.
To be honest - if they’re disagreeing that vehemently on politics, it’s not the only thing they’re disagreeing on. I’m guessing that the ones cutting the GOP-supporting family off aren’t saying “uncle so-and-so is an angel, except for his voting habits”.

My guess is the context behind those habits, and (especially in the US) everyone being so vocal about their team. Maybe they vehemently disagree on LBGTQ rights, or abortion, or whatever.

And now, rather than grinning and bearing it for the sake of “making nice”, they find that they don’t have to anymore. So the options are shouting matches at the Thanksgiving dinner table, or cutting them off.

Both get the same point across but one involves more pokey-chest.

Thats a great way to ensure the conservatives out breed you...
That’s how Idiocracy started, right? 😏

I remember being taught not to talk about politics, religion and sex in company with strangers.

It seems we've thrown that out the window and I'm not convinced we're better off.
I remember that too - and how after a drink or two, that went out the window anyway.

I always thought that it was to be polite and to present a good facade…and to stop discussion about it.

Perhaps. Wisers has a way of bringing out the truth ;)

In vino veritas.

I find that analogous to the “don’t talk about how much you get paid” in the private sector. Obviously we don’t have that issue, but it’s not about politeness or modesty, it’s so the employers don’t have a rash of employees realizing that they don’t pay them enough.
