The Unintended Consequences of Diversity Statements

Is it, or is it being a sore loser that can't face the people they assumed the worst about because they disagreed on politics?

Throwing away family because you don't agree on politics is a pretty smooth brain decision.
To be honest - if they’re disagreeing that vehemently on politics, it’s not the only thing they’re disagreeing on. I’m guessing that the ones cutting the GOP-supporting family off aren’t saying “uncle so-and-so is an angel, except for his voting habits”.

My guess is the context behind those habits, and (especially in the US) everyone being so vocal about their team. Maybe they vehemently disagree on LBGTQ rights, or abortion, or whatever.

And now, rather than grinning and bearing it for the sake of “making nice”, they find that they don’t have to anymore. So the options are shouting matches at the Thanksgiving dinner table, or cutting them off.

Both get the same point across but one involves more pokey-chest.

Thats a great way to ensure the conservatives out breed you...
That’s how Idiocracy started, right? 😏

I remember being taught not to talk about politics, religion and sex in company with strangers.

It seems we've thrown that out the window and I'm not convinced we're better off.
I remember that too - and how after a drink or two, that went out the window anyway.

I always thought that it was to be polite and to present a good facade…and to stop discussion about it.

Perhaps. Wisers has a way of bringing out the truth ;)

In vino veritas.

I find that analogous to the “don’t talk about how much you get paid” in the private sector. Obviously we don’t have that issue, but it’s not about politeness or modesty, it’s so the employers don’t have a rash of employees realizing that they don’t pay them enough.

Speaking of "breeding"...

Women 18 - 29
61% Democrats
38% Republicans

Women 30 - 44
56% Democrats
41% Republicans

I was going to post something about more educated women wanting fewer children, but apparently that wasn’t the case in 2023.

A pair of interesting bookends to the DEI era?

Critical Race Theory Is an Inversion of History

Tribalism and racism were universal until Britons and Americans developed a new way of thinking.

The Counter-DEI offensive is just getting warmed up, apparently ;)

DEI programs weathered a myriad of attacks this year, with more to come in 2025

Diversity, equity and inclusion programs at some of the country’s biggest companies fell apart in 2024. Anti-DEI efforts will most likely only ramp up in 2025.

Couldn't happen to a nicer programme.

DEI has been withering on the corporate vine for much of this year. Although I’m no fan of Trump or Poilievre I sure hope they kill it off altogether.

DEI had IMO good intentions BUT like so many things with good intentions it was hijacked by Special Interest Groups who have zero clue on how things actually run, not to mention their own racist ideologies.

The road to the Dark Side is paved with good intentions.

As a Canadian, I found these U.S. explanations of DEI, EEO and AA of interest,

DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) is a broader framework aimed at creating environments where all individuals feel valued and can thrive.

EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on factors such as race, national origin, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Affirmative Action focuses on representation, while DEI initiatives address cultural, structural, and interpersonal aspects of inclusion.

Here in Canada, we have had Employment Equity ( EE ) since 1984.

The roots of employment equity are in the 1984 Abella commission, chaired by Judge Rosalie Abella. She considered a U.S. term, "affirmative action", but decided not to use it because of the emotions and ill will surrounding affirmative action. In its place she created the term "employment equity" for the Canadian context.

My former employer calls it: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion ( EDI ).

The forthcoming changes at Facebook is another massive hit to DEI, Zuck even says his own Fact Checkers were politically and DEI biased.
To protect his company from California state law backlash, he’s moving his content moderation teams to Texas and changing almost every policy that suppresses free speech in the US.

Hmmm... so taking after X. Maybe Elon is on to something.

Reality is there already was equity and inclusion. Racism was practically extinct until DEI people brought it back.

The "DEI" policies have impacted the bottom line of big business, and nobody is going to tolerate that for long. It was a fun experiment for some. We can now get back to a meritocracy.
