The War in Ukraine

Mortar shells are better for drones as are RPG warheads, high bang to weight factor. My question then is how do you make them safe for handing on the drone and are they recoverable, or is it worth making them recoverable?

A micro-economic version of whether or not aircraft should recover to aircraft carriers with their bombs?

And talking of economics

And if attrition is the game, then it’s Russia’s massively larger economy and manpower that have the advantage. And Putin, ignoring all voices of pragmatism and reason, seems determined to fight on till the bitter end regardless of the price in blood and treasure.

...

I am minded of the debate about importing labour. As long as labour is cheap productivity will not improve.

Ukraine, like Israel, has to improve productivity or die. They have to figure out how to kill Russians AND have time to take the family out for a coffee.

My money is on the Ukrainians. And the Balts. The Poles. The Scandinavians.

Another very not good day for the Russians.

This makes 3 destroyed and 2 damaged Su-34's just in the past week.

Gotta be some misreporting here. A colonel as acting CO of a Combined Arms Army? No way.

Can't speak about the accuracy of his role or the pile of wet spaghetti that is the Russian chain of command, but even Russian milblogs and other channels are confirming his death as a result of the strike.

Good old Colby. I remember when people told me the US would sell weapons to Ukraine. The good old days
Right? US already said no to a 30B arms package Ukraine wanted to buy. The fact this was aid already promised, and I've heard some of it was already in Poland waiting to cross into Ukraine too!

Be a shame if a couple truck drivers "missed" the orders to turn around

Nooooooot a good look - more on that via Politico:

Just listening to a podcast today* (about a month old - catching up) where the expert was saying the best way for the US to show it's supporting UKR is to dump a ton of Patriot missiles on them ...
So much for THIS clause in the mineral deal, eh? Highlights mine ....

* - Yeah, it's the SAME Darth Putin that maintains this account ...
The hosts know their stuff, but mixed bag re: comfort doing "broadcast" interviews. Good guests, good info.

More on Trump appearing to do Vladdy Daddy’s bidding. Or at least trying to appease him.

The latest iteration of “Trump will be good for Ukraine” lasted three days, but sadly this might have been the most tragic. We have had a number of such moments over the last months. My favorite (in a horrifying way) was the famous Trump-Zelensky sit down in St Peters during the funeral of Pope Francis. For some reason, this picture led people to believe that Trump was honestly going to help Ukraine.

Trump did what he always does after such meetings. Make a bland pro-Ukrainian/anti-Russian statement and then goes back to Washington and continues to help Putin as much as possible. In case you do not remember, the statement Trump made after the St Peter’s meeting was a question that ‘Maybe he (Putin) doesn’t want to stop the war’.

It was meaningless, self-evidently true, committed Trump to nothing—and quickly forgotten.

Btw, this happened on April 26.

Well, it did not take two weeks for this nonsense to be exposed—just two days. It turns out that the US Department of Defense, at that very moment, was working to turn off as much of the remaining aid taps for Ukraine as they could—including the exact air-defense equipment that Trump mentioned. Last night the White House confirmed that the US was stopping some/all of the remaining (Biden-era) shipments of aid to Ukraine including crucial Patriot air defense systems (and other vital material).

This is a shopping list of much of the most important aid that Ukraine desperately needs to fight and without which many more Ukrainians will die. The nightly bombardment of Ukrainian cities will now be more effective for Russia, and the Ukrainian ability to strike back on the Russians will be lessened.

Just as a clarification—not only are the Patriots a crucial part of the Ukrainian air defense network, AIM-7 (Sparrow) missiles and Stingers are further key parts of the Ukrainian air defense network.

If Putin could write a wish list of the weapons he would want Trump to keep from Ukraine—this would be it.

The idea that the US needs these now is also a sham. Many of these weapons would be of dubious value in a war to protect Taiwan (and btw, the US is hardly planning for one I was recently told).

The situation is indeed extremely murky, if anything. Perhaps people have confused something with the 20,000 anti-drone rockets we already knew about getting redirected?

The Defense Ministry also stressed that individuals making public claims about weapons transfers to Ukraine may not have access to complete information.

U.S. still supplying Patriot missiles to Ukraine, Podolyak says

On the upside, more (positive) rumblings.

Russia's continuing it's conversion... into a NK puppet?

As I recall from my readings , as originally designed the OV 10 was to use 4.2 inch mortar rounds as droppable ordinance.

I hope he’s right, with my fingers crossed, but either, 1) the Patriots are still flowing (contrary to US Gov’t reports), the 2) UKR guy hasn’t gotten the memo yet, or 3) the UKR guy is being glass-is-half-full by saying “hey, I just saw a patriot missle being dropped off here moments ago, so they must still be coming.” We’ll see …
Sounds like the Politico report was inaccurate, unless these are two separate issues…

Shocking. Guess he'll have to pull more support from Ukraine to punish Putin?

Keep an eye on this one, with the recent confusion (?) that happened.
