Transport Canada has grounded a Quebec-based charter aviation company, effectively ending its air operations.

The agency revoked Aeropro's operating permit Saturday night after an audit that found repeated violations of Canadian aviation regulations.

The move by Transport Canada comes on the heels of an Aeropro plane crash near the airport last June that killed seven people.

Aeropro is a 22-year-old company that runs business and recreational charters. It says it has 250 employees based out of the Quebec City airport.

Transport Canada spokeswoman Denise Langis said Sunday the agency conducted a thorough investigation of the entire company that included a risk assessment and employee interviews.

She said the agency found significant shortcomings with respect to management, air operations and training.

"A certificate cancellation is a rare and unusual measure that is not imposed lightly," she said.

Langis said the agency is not releasing any more details on its investigation at the moment.

Aeropro filed for an injunction in federal court following Transport Canada's decision. It was rejected.

On Sunday, company spokesman Stephane Dion called the court's decision a disappointment.

"Passenger security has always been a priority for Aeropro," he said.

Whether the company will soon be able to resume operations is unclear.

"We're analyzing all the options at our disposal," said Dion.

He said another aviation company will take over all scheduled flights for this week.

The Aeropro plane crash on June 23 killed five passengers and two crew members.

Witnesses reported seeing the twin-turboprop Beechcraft King Air 100 explode into flames before slamming into the sprawling yard of a local resident.

That accident came a month after another plane crashed in nearby L'Isle Aux Grues, killing four people. That flight slammed into an embankment 15 minutes after takeoff and disintegrated into flames.

That plane was also carrying an Aeropro sticker, and its operator had business ties to Aeropro, but the company it denied it owned the plane.
