Travel on Leave After Course

I'm currently scheduled to go on course in Oct-Dec, and am planning on using that location as a jumping off point for my leave. I will be travelling on my leave, and intend on flying from that location back to my home unit. I have been told from several others in my unit that the cost of travel I would have incurred to get back to my home unit can be reimbursed to apply to my travel from my leave destination. However, I'm having some trouble finding the reference that states the eligibility for this.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of travel and/or know where to find more information? I could not find anything in the CFTDI manual that speaks to this.

Any help is much appreciated!

If you are proceeding from your current unit to another location on TD, then your travel arrangements are made for you by your unit.  If you will be taking annual leave upon completion of your course, then your unit still has an obligation to pay for your travel back.

They would have to do a "hypothetical costing" to determine what the cost of the return travel is based on had you NOT taken annual leave and then compare that to what the cost "will be" if you do take annual leave.  Provided the cost does NOT exceed what the original cost would have been, then it can be approved.  You would not be entitled to TD expenses once your leave starts and until it ends.  Once you commence your travel back, you're now on duty and entitled to TD benefits based on the hypothetical costing.

I do not have the ref here but, TB has directed that for cases like this the home unit will book the member back to the home unit on the last day of the course or the next day.  It is then up to the member to contact the airline and change the return flight.  The member will be on the hook for any change fees and the difference in the cost of the ticket if there is any.
