Taken from the RA we received a few minutes ago:

As the severe weather approaches the Region and as we make mil preps to respond if req it is probably a good time to review our personal sit and ensure that we have taken adequate measures to ensure the safety and security of our own families. The attached link to Public Safety is a good place to start. Pls distr as widely as possible to your formations.

Two major storms are approaching the Maritimes and will impact on New Brunswick and Nova Scotia on Sunday. A storm coming up the coast will combine with Tropical Storm Kyle and track across the Bay of Funday overnight Sunday.
Kyle will likely come ashore overnight Sunday as a Cat I hurricane. This means hurricane force winds and rainfall of 100mm Sunday evening through Monday. While hurricane impacts will be relatively short lived we can expect several days of rain.

This is a potentially very serious event.
The US track suggests Kyle will come ashore in southern New Brunswick and track north east across the province. This will impact on Saint John, Fredericton, Miramichi and Bathurst.
The CA track places Kyle further east coming ashore at Yarmouth and tracking North West from there; that would impact on Moncton.

Well its been 5 years since we had a hurricane in Nova Scotia.  Hopefully people don't go bonkers 'cause Tim Hortins isn't open this time  :)

It sounds like it's going to be a doozy, Eye. There are actually supposed to be 2 storms arriving on Sunday, so that should be, um, "interesting".  :o

At least the temps are pretty mild this week, so if the power goes out, it won't be so bad. Time to charge the batteries and buy some extra munchies!

I'm actually kind of excited for this.  Storms fascinate me, and back home in Ontario we didn't get a whole lot of interesting weather, so this is a first for me.  :)

Aside from rain for the weekend and the few days following, its now a matter of waiting to see what happens Sunday/Sunday night.  What we got from the J3 side was vague other than we are on SB.  Watch and shoot.

I remember the one five years ago. We were all ready for it in the valley and after it was all done we got nothing more than a bit of downed tree branches and power lines. Nothing compared to what Halifax got.

Stay safe to everybody out there.

Me too! :) My little one is a bit nervous, though. We experienced a hurricane in Florida this past June and it really freaked her out, so now the mention of a tropical storm or the H word frightens her a bit. I've told her that we'll watch movies (with batteries if need be) and have munchies and make it a fun occasion rather than a scary one.

Was it in November? There was a bad storm in November the first year I was in the valley (not sure if it was Juan or "white Juan" but pretty sure it was one of them) and we lost power for two whole days. Being new to the area and not knowing anyone, we ended up at the fire hall for most of that time.  :P

This is the word from the National Hurricane Centre...

SB=stand by.  J3 is JTFA (Joint Task Force Atlantic) Operations cell for Dom Ops (Domestic Operations) basically.  Simply put, the provincial EMOs (Emergency Measures Organizations) will request, if needed, services from the CF prior to, during and in the aftermath of the (maybe) hurricane.  J3 Ops will then task out units/personnel to meet those requests if and when it occurs.

Watch and shoot = 'wait and see what happens and go from there'.  But for now..the only 'watching and shooting' I am doing is the Rocket/Moosehead game on Eastlink TV.  ;)

Thanks for the translation. I'm usually the one doing that for students. I hate being a newbie.  :crybaby:  (lol)

White Juan was in Feb. 2004. That dropped about 100 cm's of snow where I was and we had no power for about two days. That may be the one your thinking about. All the buildup of snow and ice snapped a cable tower over the Avon River causing the power outage. I remember trying to get out of my subdivision to try and get to the firehall for calls in all that snow.

We were told today to be ready to sail at short notice in case the storm curves our way. I guess the idea is to send the fleet to sea instead of alongside.

This would have been Nov. 2004. Perhaps it was just an extra-bad ice storm or blizzard that knocked the power lines down. In any case, no power for two days...N.S. Power was taking a beating in the press. In retrospect, 2003/2004 was bad for storms in NS!

Hurricane Juan hit NS in Sep '03.

"White Juan" was the winter storm (n'or easter) that hit us in the winter of '04.

I'm trying to remember this one in November. I saw some of the articles about it but it still doesn't ring a bell.

Your right though about 2003/04 being bad for storms. There was a few good ones.

Hopefully, 2008/2009 won't follow the same trend. However, the last time they predicted a big tropical storm (maybe a month ago or so), we just got a bit of wind and rain. Not much of anything. So with Sunday's storm being so hyped, I can't help but wonder if it will again just be a 'regular' storm. I'll have my supplies handy just in case. ;)

Hopefully it will end up being a weak one. They have done that many times in the past but at least you'll be ready.

*sigh* I miss the Maritimes. All we get in Manitoba is Tornado watches.

SBs suck for us...but its worse for the folks in the estab's IRU in LFAA I bet.  Atleast they have (maybe) a clear idea of what's going on from getting a frickin' Wng O.  If I ask about Wng O's, NMBs and DNTMs all I get is "deer in the headlights"  ::)
