This is from the Environment Canada website for Grand Manan Island

Tropical storm Kyle is currently west of Bermuda and is expected to reach hurricane strength as it moves northward. Kyle is forecast to track just west of Saint John New Brunswick after midnight Sunday night. It will continue northward over southeastern New Brunswick and reach Anticosti Island by Monday evening.

Rain associated with a non-related frontal system will affect most of the province tonight into Sunday. Rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm or more are likely tonight and during the day Sunday. As Kyle moves across southeastern New Brunswick Sunday night through Monday it will be accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to occur west of Kyle's track Sunday night while the strongest winds will occur east of the track.

Kyle is now a Hurricane.  Lets hope it stays a Cat 1 before it hits us.  It will be 5 years to the day that the last Hurricane (Juan) hit the Maritimes.

So...I'm in Afghanistan.  To be honest, I'm worried: my family is in NB (south of Oromocto).  Yes, I'm worried for them.  Oi: hope it's not much more than some wind and rain!

Which is all it is going to be, a windy rain storm...

Do mean this? Let's hope it downgrades to a tropical storm.  Who wants the CAT 1 ripping through their yard?

From Environment Canada.....

Oromocto and Sunbury County
9:50 AM ADT Sunday 28 September 2008
Rainfall warning for
Oromocto and Sunbury County continued

Rainfall amounts exceeding 50 millimetres are expected until tomorrow.

At 9 AM ADT this morning hurricane Kyle was located 225 kilometres south southeast of Cape Cod and moving northward 35 km/h. On its path Kyle is forecast to pass just to the west of Yarmouth very late this Sunday evening or very early Monday morning just before making landfall on the New Brunswick coast before dawn Monday. Rain associated with a non-related frontal system will affect most of the province today. Rainfall amounts of up to 20 millimetres are likely today. As Kyle moves across southern New Brunswick tonight it will be accompanied by heavy rain and very strong winds. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to occur west of Kyle's track while the strongest winds will occur east of the track. Additional rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 millimetres can be expected tonight and early Monday.

Current indications are that by Monday morning the weekend rainfall tally should range somewhere between 50 and 100 millimetres for most areas. Emo New Brunswick reminds the public that rainfall in these amounts in a short period of time can result in rapid increase in water levels in streams and rivers and localized flash flooding.

The strong winds associated with Kyle are forecast to reach sustained values of 65 km/h or more with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h near the Fundy coast. These same winds speeds in similar events in the past have caused significant tree damage that has resulted in downed power lines and damage to structures due to falling branches or trees. All preparations to secure loose objects should be completed by afternoon

So.... wonder if that means the 3 ROWPU's at the school would be put into service if needed?

I worded that poorly.  I meant I hope it doesn't continue to strengthen and go Cat 2.

The Weather Network now said the expected landfall is somewhere close to the Maine/NB border and it is likely to be downgraded to a Tropical Storm once it makes landfall.

I love the Weather Network and Environment Canada since Juan...every time we get a gale they start in with the red flashing screen of doom.

My farm house will survive, my wine supply may not.

So true.

The concern in these parts is mostly about the water it will bring. Already swampland, and after a summer of record rainfalls to further saturate the earth coming after record breaking flooding in the spring  ...  it is the water and it's inability to be even partially abosrbed by the ground which is of concern.

We still have local business', homeowners etc fighting with insurance companies from the spring floods. Pro-Am, for example fighting hard to avoid bankruptcy already - let alone tossing more damage from water/winds etc on top of everything else. Still have areas (especially in & around Saint John) experiencing major issues from overstauration/flooding associated with the last tropical storm that rolled through there two weeks ago.

My backyard is already flooded - the water simply can't be absorbed any more after the other weather system that went through here yesterday and early this morning dumped 50mms on us. If we get the 100mm being predicted with Kyle tonight and early Monday, especially so in Saint John etc, I'm wagering that the economic damage done will be vast - let alone the damage to regular old homeowners like me. We've got a whole lot of provincal territory to look after - with a pretty small tax base. And, there's not too many places in NB that are NOT near rivers, streams etc - and that is where they're predicting our biggest damage areas will be due to the flooding that will (it's not a "may" - it's a will) occur.

The warnings are out for people living near waterways - hopefully people have heeded them. It's the only place for this water that's still coming to go. The ground is sick and tired, and fed up, and not taking any more water.

I surely can't find fault with Enviornment Canada for flashing that red screen - for if they didn't do that given the obvious oversaturation already existing in this province and someone died because of that "forecasted flooding" not being "forecast" ... that just wouldn't be on.

I didn't know it was that saturated, I thought the rain from the last one that went thru would have run off long ago.

The Maritimes just wasn't lucky enough of have this storm track more NE and have it just skip along just off our (NS) east coast.

The water table is way up. It's done nothing but rain all apring/summer. The water from yesterday's 50 mm is just sitting in my yard, not going anywhere, with another 100mms possible from Kyle, - it's got no place to go but up over the curbs, into basements etc.

The surface water has run off from the last one, but the ground is still saturated. What came in last night and this morning ... already sits as surface water in my yard now ... 100 mm more added to that surface area will put it well above my basement window openings.

As of 3 pm (4 hours ago), Kyle was located 245 kilometres east of Cape Cod and moving northward at 45 km/h.  Going by the Environment Canada website, Kyle is forecast to pass just to the west of Yarmouth very late this Sunday evening or very early Monday morning just before making landfall on the New Brunswick coast before dawn Monday, going again from the forecast for Grand Manan Island.

However, the Weather Network track has Kyle passing over Yarmouth and Digby counties, then crossing the Bay of Fundy before making its way to NB.  It looks like Yarmouth and Dibgy counties are gonna take this one on the chin.  Kyle is supposed to hit Yarmouth at high tide.  Same thing as Juan did here in '03.

The Weather Network has issued Hurricane Warning for Shelburne, Yarmouth and Digby Counties.
