Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

Do it Trudeau! Do it!

It is clear that liberals believe their political prospects hinge on the western provinces separating from Canada before they have the opportunity to vote against them.

I think he is spoiling the batch as much as possible now. Leaving an absolute mess for the CPC to clean up.

The economic update on Monday should be fabulous. Expect the Canadian dollar to react appropriately.

My guess:
  • miss budget target of 40bn;
  • miss defence spending estimate;
  • less money raised on capital gains tax;
  • blabber on about the GST holiday; and
  • aren't we a great government.

It’s greasy some of the ways they are going after capital gains tax now.

For example if you take advantage of their money to build a ensuite to rent or put family whatever size the suite is becomes exempt from the personal home exemption for tax purposes. Now if you sell you will pay taxes on the profit from that part of the property, potentially wiping out hundreds of thousands in profit for the owner. Isn’t it great how they are helping?

They just want to be able to cheer about how they are looking out for the middle class…you know the same shirt, sleeves rolled-up, no tie types like this hardworking regular guy?

So something that isn't a principal residence should be covered by the principal residence exemption?

The property is still their principal residence. The government is offering 7.5k to gain much much more than that in taxes from the status change. I view it along the lines of a bait and switch, particularly since they aren’t announcing that it will change the status.

Once that begins to collect tax it’s going to be pretty hard to roll it back without pissing off everyone who has had to pay it.

I love how the "inflation rate being in the target range..." makes life affordable for everyone....oh wait.

In the needle not moving for the LPC category…

Keep an eye on bond yield rates…especially after the upcoming Fiscal Update is announced and the deficit is up and the *Government issues even more bonds and M2 causes more monetary devaluation and Canada’s return to recession kicks in…

When Trudeau was recently crowing about how life is good with inflation back under control, he ignores the fact that the only thing that would make things easier on Canadians would be several consecutive quarters of deflation (not just 2-3% inflation) to bring the absolute cost of living back to affordable levels…
