I get that. I have a very filty peasant (and naive) take on it - no one in our government deserves to be charging tax payers $1500 steak meals on a flight.

I would love to see the PM eat an IMP, sans heater bc not allowed on aircraft.

My point being that if Poilievre wants to cut costs, is he willing to cut his own meals as well?

PP hasnt exactly been conservative in his spending habits as leader of the official opposition and seems to like the accommodations well enough

He was right inasmuch as there’s no direct mechanism for party members to simply say “enough”. By very sound convention, the GG will not dissolve parliament until loss of confidence in the House has been concretely demonstrated. That has not yet happened. On the contrary the government survived several recent confidence votes; Poillievre’s theatrics might have actually slightly weakened his own case in that respect.

Even if Liberal MPs want to buck the party leader on a confidence vote, they still need to wait for a confidence matter to be before the House. That will happen, but I don’t know how soon the opposition will have the opportunity to introduce one.

I’m not sure if government members are able to just throw their own thing out there, but I suspect not. This is well beyond my level of knowledge of Parliamentary procedure.

it remains a peculiarly Canadian problem where the caucus seems unable to bend the leader to their will. To our detriment IMO.

If a Liberal MP is not on cabinet appointment or something similar, they are NOT part of the government. I only learned this recently.

We have to understand the real world. The real world will look on a nation that constantly underfunds its military as weak. Same goes for government travel. While the expenses are enormous to the common folk those same expenses are a cost of doing business in the real world.

I do prefer that the government "shop around" and make prudent financial decisions though. AND there should be zero alcohol on government flights.

The problem is that in most civilian airports, there is one food contractor. If you don’t use them, you’re not getting food. So “shopping around” isn’t really an option.

In the bad, old days alcohol could be served on certain flights (I was on a couple) but the main pax were very senior adults (not only Canadian) and it did not get out of hand. This story from the Toronto Star seems to indicate that common sense and discipline missed some more recent flights. Based on what I saw on other flights, I am gobsmacked, although I saw one passenger lose control, but he was handled politely and firmly and all soon was well.

I don’t think the prices were per person, although the “Quantity” column is blank in the receipt in the article.

I'll see if I can dig up the source. I recall it being a $1500ish bill for the whole meal (I think the fancy potato's were $200 or something?) And there was a question on whether this meal was for Simon or her husband who had joined her.

$500+ for lemons and limes, and $500+ for ice seems like a good place to start being more responsible with tax dollars.

A business class or even a first class meal from any of the airline suppliers should be more than sufficient and I can almost guarantee that they don't cost 1500 a serving

I don’t know how many more ways that I can say this:

The RCAF does not get charged the same price for flight feeding as Lufthansa does in Frankfurt or Emirates does in Dubai. Using business class meals as a metric is a false one.

You either pay the price or you go hungry.

Not an expert on aircraft (former line cook), but I imagine there is a lack of refrigeration capability to keep meals food safe long enough to do that.

Also, large batch/small portion prep is massive ass pain for any caterer, let alone have to have them sealed for reheating God knows when. When youre the only game in town in some cases, you get to set the price.

It costs money to provide a warm, foodsafe meal while you're sitting in the literal sky. It's not the same as critiquing someone choosing the Keg over Dennys when on TD.

Food safe laws.

There are a certain number of hours those foods can be legally stored. Definitely not for days.
