Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

but I wonder why people are allowed to walk right up to him like that. I assume he tells his security detail to let it happen...
I respect him for that*

Under his watch violent crime (and property crime) is now higher than in the USA. Which is crazy.
People able to get in his face like that puts him a little more on the level with the rest of us.

* I'm sure he would excitedly capitalize on any sort of physical altercation though he might be a little less inclined to spout off about "MAGA influence" if it happens.

The security detail’s job is physical threats, not political embarrassment. I expect they’re very good at gauging when the PM is willingly engaging with someone.
My wife’s cousin was RCMP security for a number of years and protected a number of high profile national and international politicians. I think he had eyes in the back of his head.

I don't feel sorry for him at all, of course, but I wonder why people are allowed to walk right up to him like that. I assume he tells his security detail to let it happen...
His blithe smile indicates he thought she was probably coming up to ask for a selfie….not a GTFOutie…

Readers may, or may not, find this 2024 study by the Fraser Institute comparing recent crime trends in Canada and the United States of interest:

Comparing Recent Crime Trends in Canada and the United States

After a long period of declining crime rates in both Canada and the United States since the 1990s, recent years have seen new disquiet even though overall, crime rates remain at relatively historic lows. In the case of the United States, data from both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Justice Statistics show dramatic long-term declines in US violent and property crime rates. Canada, using police reported crime rate data, also shows a dramatic long-term decline in both violent and property crime rates.

However, while relative to Canada, crime rates are higher in the United States for homicides and violent crimes ( once adjusted for comparability * ), they historically have been more similar in the case of property crime.

See * below:

* The Canadian equivalent of assault level 1 ( not involving serious injury or use of a weapon ) is not classified as a violent crime in the United States. Thus, the higher overall rate of violent crime in Canada relative to the United States without this adjustment is attributable to this lowest level of violent crime.

Making an impression in the West ;)
Ooff. He chose Red Mountain? What an idiot. I’ve been to Red. It is a small town hill (fun, though) without a lot of the amenities of a bigger place like Whistler or Lake Louise. The locals would not take kindly to his entourage taking over the place…

Regarding MPs, saw this on the news last night. ( Looks like a re-play of a story originally aired five months ago.)

Wave of threats against MPs has RCMP protective unit stretched thin, assistant commissioner says

RCMP protective has been poaching cops for years ever since they finally got their raise. They have a lot of success enticing other police who are tired of the road, or MPs/CAF with close protection experience. I know a few people who work with RCMP protective now, and from what I’ve heard they are and absolutely have been stretched very thin.

Separately, heard about a federal job posting the other day: Intelligence Analyst - Various positions RCMP Protective Intelligence in Ottawa are hiring 14 indeterminate (!!!) intelligence analysts at EC-5. I deal with police intelligence analysts regularly enough to know there isn’t a huge abundance of them. A hire of 14 at once - and indeterminate public service ! - is absolutely wild. For comparison that’s very nearly the entire analyst complement of all of Ottawa Police. They’re instantly dropping a couple million a year into protective just for pay and benefits for new analysts, on top of all the cop hiring.

I can’t help but think that, following an election, protective policing demand will decrease at least somewhat. But they’re still investing in what looks like significant semi-permanent growth.

Anecdotally, from what I hear of the volume of threats against the PM specifically, the government broadly, and all MPs generally, I believe the demand is probably there.

Ongoing radicalization and propaganda aimed at delegitimizing various political groups isn't slowing down.
