Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

The geniuses who came up with bamboozle have never run a small business. The compliance costs for a store to reprogram their point of sale machines/cash registers for some items for a couple of months is not nothing.

Big government does no favours for small business, so this is part of the usual trends that amount to a national self-inflicted economic wound ....

Small Business Statistics in Canada

  • Almost 98% of Canadian businesses are small companies.
  • More than a third of small businesses are not optimistic about the future.
  • Small companies employ over 10 million Canadians.
  • Small and medium-sized companies contribute over half of Canada’s GDP.
  • The revenues of many small Canadian companies have decreased in recent years.
  • Almost 20% of small businesses with less than 20 employees expect sales to decrease.
  • Over 20% of small businesses are worried about cash flow.
  • 5% of small businesses do not survive their first year.
  • Over 70% of Canadian small businesses fail because of management issues.
  • 58% of small business owners believe a work-life balance is crucial for long-term survival.

And then there is the world of the sole proprietorship...

10 million out of a total population approx 38-40 million ain't nothing to sneeze at.
Government hates working with small businesses and self-employed types. They love working with big companies and monopolies as you get more regulatory compliance with a smaller buck. Trying to get a bunch of independent minded fishing boat owners to agree on anything is lot's of fun, that's why the laws generally favour big business and consolidations squeezing out the little guy.

A classic holdover from the industrial age, of course.

Mass customization is a thing now :)

This is exactly what my father, a former commercial fisherman, said about the East Coast fishery. Governments wanted to get away from individual owner/operator fishing, and switch to a large corporate system because it was easier for them to manage. Changes have been happening over the last 20 years to make the industry less friendly for individual owner/operators, to the point that many fishermen these days back home own multiple licenses and hire crews to fish them.

Meanwhile, a consistent track record over 6 quarters ....

Real GDP per capita declines for 6th consecutive quarter, household savings rise

The Canadian economy shrank on per-person basis for a sixth consecutive quarter as higher interest rates continued to weigh on business investment.

Statistics Canada's gross domestic product report says the economy grew at an annualized rate of one per cent in the third quarter, down from 2.2 per cent in the second quarter.

When I was young most farms were 4 quarters or so - 640 acres. There were a couple of big operators but the majority were small farms.

Small family farms are like the dinosaurs -extinct. The big operators have snapped up the land. And government was cheering on the sidelines.

Definition of the classic 'speed wobble' ;)

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was noncommittal Friday, when asked about whether the federal government would consider expanding its proposed $250 rebate cheque. She also outlined the feds rational for choosing the items that will be included in the GST “tax holiday.”

People think its incredible that I own a 95 farm. Meanwhile the ag industry is like "Thats tiny"

Interested in parceling off any land? My wife won't let me dig anymore holes in the back yard. Just looking for sea can dimensions :)
Not a chance. My land had 5 acres parceled off in 1985, thirty years before I bought it. It can not be parcelled anymore. Your free to dig as many holes as you want at this address

Funny how the Finance Minister don’t use the word ‘recession.’

They got the polling info from their remaining slightly hopeful demographic…seniors…who didn’t get the $250
