Trump administration 2024-2028

Definitely.

1. Where did you get the money for such an expensive suit?
2. That's a cheap suit, how dare you disrespect the hand that feeds you by wearing those rags!
3. Wow you're strutting around in a suit while your people are dying?
Hard to win over people with imagined slights and grievances
We are experiencing the same with our tariff issues

I'll stop short of saying Canadians deserve unemployment and a low CAD. Canadians kept Liberals in power for 10 years and being this weak (and ripe to be bullied) is a result of Canadians voting behavior. And Canadians are right back at it with Carney. If anything Trump is teaching us a very hard lesson.
Canadians are about to receive their just due. A lot of people are going to be hurt in the process unfortunately.

A vote for the LPC is a vote for Uncle Sam to sucker punch us. Is it a sucker punch though if you knowingly walk in to it?

The sheer idiocy of that video is a good start. I've watched it a few times and each time it pisses me off more. I think the poor people of Ukraine are fucked now. I thought the Americans, and Trump, had legitimate reasons to question US involvement in Ukraine. I still do. Trumps cocaine bull in a China shop approach to being president was entertaining. Now it's sobering. He's an incredibly powerful man child and it's probably going to get a lot people killed, not just in Ukraine.
Trump is teaching US a lesson? He’s teaching the entire world, including the United States, a very big lesson. Never believe anyone who always says that everything is broke and only he can fix it. Trump may turn out to be one of the greatest con men in history. The world is not going to be a better place because of him. He is out for absolute power and will gladly crush people and nations who disagree with him. He only respects dictators and strongmen. If it’s a choice between having someone like him running the country, I would gladly accept someone like Trudeau or Carney or Harper or Freeland or Poilievre or Chrétien or almost anyone instead of him.

Dude, your partisan lenses are blinding you. Trump’s abuses will continue unabated regardless of the next government being LPC or CPC. What Trump is doing is agnostic of Canadian domestic political parties.

not sure if this is the right thread or if it should be in the Ukraine political one

i dont think this is the right approach either but clearly yesterday did not go over well with some people

Beat me to it. Here's an alternative for easier readability of that entire thread and for those that don't want to touch the :poop: on X.

Ideally ground zero for the pain train is the GTA and Ottawa.
More on this:

If Tariffs happen, the consequences will be devastating to the auto industry and everything else that goes in to supporting it.

You've got so many secondary and tertiary industries involved in the process that the ripple effects would be felt across the Province. We are talking around 500,000 people whose jobs will be directly or indirectly affected by this.

Trump seems to think that counts as US dollars in his calculations.

I continue to try to understand the guy's thought processes.

I agree with you here.

I think his logic may go something like this:

Those European freeloaders are able to find money to support Ukraine.
They can't find money to defend themselves.
I am defending them with my money.
It is my money that is permitting them to support Ukraine.
On top of my money that Biden sent to them directly.

He voices similar rationale on "subsidizing" Canada.
He doesn't refer to direct subsidies alone.
He refers to balance of trade (+40 Billion to -120 Billion depending on who is cooking the books)
He also refers to defence.
3.4% is his spend. Our spend is 1.4%. The 2% delta is 40 Billion or so of a 2 Trillion GDP.
His ask is 5% resulting in a delta of 3.6% or 72 Billion.
-120 Billion and -72 Billion = his 200 Billion "subsidy"

It isn't just statisticians that can make up numbers. Accountants are pretty good at it too.

Needless to say we can disagree on the numbers, their definitions and even if we agree on the utility of the expenditures as a sovereign state. The doesn't prevent him from doing whatever he feels he can get away with to solve his perceived problems.

....

To be honest, after Munich and what I saw yesterday I am more concerned about the prospect of 12 years of JD Vance.

Blessed is the mind too small for doubt.

So what's your intent behind stating the "blatantly obvious"? I'm not sure how it adds to the discussion.

JD Vance and Zelenskyy just gave a seminar in how not to do this. ;)

Wishing economic harm from the comfort of secure public sector jobs, knowing that that harm is going to disproportionately hit the private sector, is pretty crass.

The pain from tariffs will not be felt by MPs, policymakers, or established civil servants. It’ll be the auto assembly workers, or steel and aluminum manufacturers. It’ll be the people who sell them components and raw materials. It’ll be the Mom and Pop restaurants and stores and bars near the assembly/manufacturing plants. It’ll be the truckers and rail employees who move those goods. It’ll be the cleaners and admin staff at the suddenly shuttered warehouses. It’ll be the coaches and staff for kids’ activities that parents now can’t afford. It’ll be the social and entertainment and recreational and cultural businesses that depend on people having discretionary income. It’ll be the retail workers whose stores are on razor thin margins.

The pain will be felt by the men and women you see on your morning commute, in the grocery store, when you go to the bank or the barber shop. Their faces may not be memorable- but they aren’t faceless.

Those will be the victims of Trump’s economic attacks on Canada and Canadians. There will be areas where it’s highly concentrated, but the impacts will be coast to coast.

The good news/bad news, in my opinion, is that in the space of a period of time equivalent to WW2, by adopting a similar attitude to necessity and regulations the Canadian Government Of The Day could turn the economy around and bring us up to Norwegian standards.

Norwegian GDP per capita 2023 - 87,925.09 USD
Canadian GDP per capita 2023 - 53,431.19 USD

They exploit what they have. Use what they need and sell the rest.

Norway also doesn’t have its head up its ass, and has built a significant sovereign wealth fund with its oil revenues. Federal and provincial policy failures mean that we don’t have that when we should have.

Money buys freedom. Right?
