Trump administration 2024-2028

Thanks.

Looks like 1/3 of those illiterate adults were born outside of the US.
  • New Mexico was the state with the lowest child literacy rate.
  • The state with the lowest adult literacy rate was California.

If Trump goes ahead with his deportation plans he might raise the literacy rate in the US
There is actually a correlation between illiteracy and voting DEMOCRAT as opposed to REPUBLICAN.

The most illiterate metropolitan areas overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

You can do your own comparisons but 90% of these Cities are Democrat strongholds and votes Democrat.

I do like the idea that gets perpetuated that all the rural folk are just a bunch of dumb & uneducated banjo-playing hillbillies. Similar views are held here in Canada and as such, we get to keep most of the wealth that exists in the rural parts of the Country for ourselves 😎

I’m sure the 61% of American veterans voting for Trump didn’t see this coming…
Veterans shouldn't be surprised though. They should understand that things shouldn't be operated without authorization.

Some congressional funding was approved with a set time before authorization expired. However, they continue to receive funding. A recent report by the Congressional Budget Office found more than 1,200 programs at more than $516 billion a year. When an authorization expires, Congress can extend the program through new legislation or by providing new appropriations, according to CBO.

1200 programs at $516 billion dollars. That's alot of money going towards programs that could be defunct or disappearing into someone's pocket.

Someone just had to request these programs be approved by congress again. If anything this highlights laziness and inefficiency that Trump is talking about, no?

Not really. Lots of Canada doesn’t include fluoride in drinking water anymore.

Want to guess, for example, what municipalities in British Columbia add fluoride?

Fort St.John, Terrace and Cranbrook…yup, that’s it. No Vancouver, not Victoria, Kamloops, Kelowna, Campbell River, etc. etc. etc. etc.

I suppose if CAF members were posted there, they could ask for fluoride treatment…

Interesting, in my county they started adding fluoride back to the county water supply a few years ago, after a crazy spike in childhood cavities and other tooth/gum issues.

The fact that the water is so hard (magnesium phosphate, hydrogen sulfide, and a lot of other crap, like trace levels of arsenic…) is actually most likely the issue (correlation isn’t causation and all that) as the process they where using to add the fluoride was removing a lot of the terrible stuff in the water, and that was doing more than just the fluoride.).

All this talk of the Senate not confirming these cabinet nominees is moot. Trump will just make them “acting” like the last time the Senate wasn’t keen on his nominees.
From my understanding he can nominate someone as "acting" only when Senate is in recess and at the beginning of the term. And even then its usually someone from when the department itself.

Most presidential Cabinet nominations require Senate confirmation, including all Cabinet secretaries.

Well I suppose that maybe these were expedient means to get funds where they needed to go?

And in fairness to them they didn’t say that particular program would be cut but I bet a lot of programs will be. And I suspect ideology will be factor.

But when things where authorized, those benefits shouldn’t just disappear due to trying to cheap out.

When you look at the individual programs, generally they came out of what was learned from GWOT. Medical care on a scale not seen before resulted in a severe reduction in deaths, but a significant increase in seriously wounded personnel.

Given the fact congress has been pretty dysfunctional recently - the only laziness and inefficiency I see is there.

We’ve had acting directors of a lot of agencies in the past few years. They are more limited as to what they can do, as far as powers of office.

I actually trust Dimsum’s expert assertion that the CAF is cheaping out lol.
I am an expert in cheapness, ya know.

Is this “illiterate” in English, or illiterate overall?

The reason why I ask is when I’ve been in US cities, a lot of the govt service signs are also in Spanish. Unlike Canada, the US does not have an official language.

We can circle back to the whole education thing but this was their metric for the article:

We considered certain metrics to define a literate person. We used the population enrolled in high school as our primary metric. To expand our research, we also used the population enrolled in college as a secondary metric. This population covers the age group of 18 to 24. Please note that the population enrolled in college will represent those who have completed high school. The last metric we used was the population with a Bachelor’s degree, which corresponds to individuals who have passed out of college, aged above 25. Thus, we gave first priority to the population enrolled in high school followed by the population enrolled in college and the population with a bachelor’s degree.

So yes, one normally would say that the chances of being literate are higher with a Bachelor’s degree than without finishing High School, but you can be very literate and not finish high school for various reasons. In that example, one of my former COs, a very well-read man who got a GED so he could get promoted past Lt(N) (I think), would be on the lower end of the literacy scale.

If the metric for US literacy was something like SAT scores in that field (I have never taken an SAT but I’m assuming there is a reading/writing component to it) maybe it would be a better discriminator.

Well, he was allegedly quoted as saying vets were 'suckers and losers', so it probably shouldn't come as a surprise. A wrecking ball isn't a surgical instrument.

Oh it wasn’t a surprise to me.

It came as a surprise to some Trump voters though.
