Trump administration 2024-2028

Next on the chopping block: the Pentagon...

‘Absolute mess’: Musk to cut billions from defence, shipbuilding

US President Donald Trump said he expects Elon Musk to find billions of dollars of fraud and abuse at the Pentagon during an audit that the billionaire will lead as he slashes perceived waste by US government agencies.

In an interview on Sunday (Monday AEDT), Mr Trump backed Mr Musk’s cost-cutting push through the so-called Department of Government Efficiency even as it faces growing setbacks in federal courts and allegations from Democrats that it is exceeding its powers.

How is he actually doing any of this, when he isn't actually a government employee or appointee, has no security clearance, and no actual authority, when these are all approved by Congress etc?

This is wild; guy actually got security people fired for trying to stop random tech kids in short pants getting access to the Treasury mainframe who probably broke all kinds of security laws and then possibly hacked it on top of that. Usually those people are on FBI most wanted lists.

Paris? Count US out...

Most countries miss UN climate plan deadline as fears over Trump effect on global diplomacy grow

UN climate chief still expects countries to submit their plans in the coming months

The delays raise questions about where international diplomacy is headed, with the U.S. expected to continue pulling back on climate action. Trump is exiting the Paris Agreement, rolling back rules on clean energy and green technology and aligning his administration with pro-fossil fuel interests.

Musk flings astronauts and satellites into space, you better believe he has a clearance.
Sure, but probably extremely limited need to know that doesn't cover root access to the US treasury, all the personal employment information of the US public service and all the other things he's being given. This could be one of the largest US data breaches ever being played out on the front pages of the paper.

Does track though with POTUS record of leaving nuclear secrets lying around his golf resort I guess.

I can't believe I'm saying this, ....I really can't believe I'm saying this.
If Trump manages to just clean the Stygian mess that constitutes American shipbuilding. He will have earned the thanks of his nation.
It has not been able to produce a workable ship design since the mid 90's .
They're still building Burke's not because they're a good design ( they're an excellent design actually) but because there is nothing else out there .
If there was ever and industry and Government function that actually deserved to be given a musk style purging this is it.

How much of that do you think is because of the experimental nature of what the USN keeps asking for? The zumwalt was a bit ridiculous, and the minimal crew model was too ambitious and didn't really consider sustainability or combat recoverability.

Dollar for dollar, Canada has more bureaucracy in the NSS than NAVSEA, but that doesn't actually impact the build quality (just the speed and cost).

Their shipyards are more productive than either of ours as well, so it's not even an output issue; the failures are really on the design side, and a lot of that is driven by the requirement people wanting competing priorities or new tech/tactics that haven't been tried before, and have largely failed. The T45 design had a lot of issues with some of it's innovative tech, but is actually still a pretty solid platform once they got the big items addressed that were severly impacting propulsion and PG&D.
