Trump administration 2024-2028

Yeah, OECD birth rates in general are pretty bad to dismal. Of those 38 countries, only Israel is above replacement rate and most are well below. It doesn’t seem to be improving. The rich west is seemingly unable or unwilling to grow its population simply by reproduction. Unless that changes, significant immigration is required to stave off an inverted population pyramid and economic collapse
Oh you and math…

Next thing the world won’t be flat and all that. ;)

I read a bit of the SCOTUS decision, and my assumption was that ICE are allowed to stop you, ask questions, and check ID, based on racial profiling, not that they could arrest you and take you away based on racial profiling.
Yes, however ICE isn’t one to stand for mere constitutional rights and legalities. What I don’t get it everyone has gone through FLETC and has a pretty decent knowledge of Federal Law, and no one seems to be asking any questions about the orders.

Even if the wrongful detentions publicized daily, are but a fraction of the actual arrests, it’s fairly abhorrent in a democratic society (yes yes yes we are a Democratic Republic), which checks and balances, that are supposed to believe in the presumption of innocence and well yeah the entire 4th Amendment…

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

'Capricious'... that's the word I've been searching for over the past couple of months.

Trump’s retreat from Nato was priced in. But his humiliation of Qatar and India spells total chaos

In this new phase of Trump’s foreign policy, uneasiness about his unreliability is hardening into understanding that overexposure to the whims of his regime is straight-up dangerous, because there is no degree of investment in him that will bear fruit. A ruthless deal-maker is only worth engaging with when they observe one fundamental rule: once the deal is made, even if it is a bad one, it is abided by. Trump has violated that tenet. And when it comes to Israel, Trump no longer appears as someone who can be persuaded, flattered and wooed by Arab states. He simply does not have the attention span to prevent the conflict from sprawling in ways that are increasingly redrawing the physical and political map of the Middle East. He is a lazy and capricious emperor, sitting on the heap of a nation roiled by violence and crisis.

This line: “But the choice now for many US allies is between handing their sovereignty over to Trump, or finding ways to shore it up by other means, while not making an enemy of the US president.”

This seems to be what Carney understands and is working to do. The new reality.

The rich west is seemingly unable or unwilling to grow its population simply by reproduction. Unless that changes, significant immigration is required to stave off an inverted population pyramid and economic collapse
And hence the push for robotics and automation to replace the workers (synthetic labour). That will not, however, fill the consumer gap. Either way, we are headed for a significant socioeconomic challenge

I guess they don't want to have to buy more tinfoil ;)

Trump loves AI, and the MAGA world is getting worried

Trump's White House is all-in on building powerful American artificial intelligence. The populist base is starting to push back.

President Donald Trump’s AI action plan has set off a backlash from some of the biggest figures in the America First movement — a rift expected to shape the next round of arguments in Congress about how to turbocharge the technology.

Trump’s rush toward AI is exposing an important faultline in the Republican coalition: Many of its voters and leaders deeply mistrust the power of Big Tech, but Trump himself has worked closely with industry CEOs to deliver on their priorities.

I'd take that with a grain of salt. Do you recall explaining your articulable cause or RPG to every by-stander when on the job?
Nope. Outside of court, the only people I felt compelled to explain my grounds were the person being detained, the parent of a young person being detained, or another member who was required to continue the arrest (i.e. handing an arrested person over to a breath tech).

I certainly wouldn't say something to a random person I don't know that clearly violates a person's rights (assuming, since I don't ICE's authorities) knowing that it could very well come back and bite me in the butt, either in court or in a conduct complaint.

From what I've seen in the media, ICE appears to act like they are beyond accountability.

I'm no expert but it sounds like 'suspending habeas corpus', or something like that...
Which is something that hasn't been mentioned in a while. This administration has gone on record saying that it exists at his whim.

There is always a lack of context in this kind of reporting. And this thread is largely anti-trump everything....so...
It seems every time this administration is called to account, the concept of Trump Derangement Syndrome is invoked. What seems to be overlooked is the mirror Trump Adoration Syndrome by many of his supporters. While the average supporter might be excused for being caught up in the frenzy, like teenage girls at a Beatles concert (I'm clearly dating myself), actual lawmakers, those folks who are supposed to know better, so far have tabled legislation to:

  • get his likeness added to Mount Rushmore
  • get his image on currency
  • naming an airport after him
  • renaming the DC subway system

This is in addition to wanting him awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

This is a level of idolification that would make Dear Leader blush.

I know good leadership when I see it, and this ain't it.

And then there's this, a fine example of arch-sycophancy in action ...

“Mr. President, your first 100 days has far exceeded that of any other presidency in this country ever … ever,” she said, awkwardly emphatic. “Never seen anything like it. Thank you. Your directive to me was very simple: Make America safe. And, despite that, we’ve still been defending over 200 civil lawsuits filed against you.”

Bondi read some statistics about the government’s fentanyl seizures, “which saved — are you ready for this, media?” She turned to the camera. “258 million lives.” She turned back to Trump. “Kids are dying every day because they’re taking this junk,” she said. “They’re dropping dead, and no longer, because of you, what you’ve done.”

It’s unclear what kind of math Bondi used to determine that Trump saved the lives of 258 million Americans, equal to around 75 percent of the nation’s population. She had said the previous day that Trump had saved a comparatively modest “119 million lives.” A source with knowledge of the matter says Bondi intentionally inflated the number at the Cabinet meeting not just to flatter Trump, but to troll the media. Regardless, the exaggeration was so absurd that even White House officials were howling with laughter about it later.

According to two other sources, several Trump aides responded to Bondi’s boast by actively scouring the internet for evidence that Democrats and media figures were, in the words of one of these sources, “flipping the fuck out.” This was, in part, so they could compile a dossier of the reactions, print them out, and show them to Trump, knowing he would delight in the outrage. The Cabinet meeting was a success.

The way Trump is handling these meetings with his top lieutenants “definitely gives off Dear Leader vibes, like what you would see with Kim Jong Un or [Vladimir] Putin,” says Virginia Canter, the chief counsel for ethics and anti-corruption at Democracy Defenders Fund. She says it shows the president “constantly needs to be reassured of loyalty” and sees his Cabinet members as “basically his personal staff, and they’re there to stroke his ego.”

This touches on something that confuses me. I have nothing in my wallet that says I am a Canadian citizen. Does ICE have access to some database that has the citizenship or immigration status of everyone in the US?
Curious to know quickly something like the Registrar of Births in Ontario can be accessed by an organization like the RCMP or OPP when looking to confirm if someone was or was not born in Ontario.
If said person supplies their legal name, date of birth, city/town of birth in Ontario, parents name, including Mother's maiden name, if they could confirm this within an hour or two.

I’m aware of birth certificates, passports and I think there are “naturalized citizen” cards. Might be other methods I’m not aware of.

But if you’re a citizen born here, you’re probably not carrying those things around with you.
