Trump administration 2024-2028

Insanity.

The Attack on Chicago

Don’t look away from this story.

In the middle of the night last Tuesday — around 1 a.m. — masked federal agents rappelled from Black Hawk helicopters onto the roof of a five-story apartment building in South Chicago. It was a full military-style attack on an American city. Guns drawn, they blew down and kicked open apartment doors. Tossed flash bang grenades. Rousted residents from their sleep at gun point. Children were zip-tied; and naked kids were separated from their parents. American citizens were handcuffed and detained without even the pretense of probable cause.2

The local media accounts are horrifying:

Armed federal agents in military fatigues busted down their doors overnight, pulling men, women and children from their apartments, some of them naked, residents and witnesses said.
“They was terrified. The kids was crying. People was screaming. They looked very distraught. I was out there crying when I seen the little girl come around the corner, because they was bringing the kids down, too, had them zip tied to each other,” one resident recalled to local media. “That’s all I kept asking. What is the morality? Where’s the humanity? One of them literally laughed. He was standing right here. He said, ‘fuck them kids.’”

Even days later the military-style attack on a Chicago apartment building feels like one of those moments that historians will recognize as a dark milestone. Of course, it may be overshadowed by subsequent even more draconian assaults; but it felt like something breaking — something that will be difficult to put back together again.

This morning, I want to call your attention to something else: the video that Kristi Noem put out celebrating and glorifying the horrific attack.

It’s no secret that ICE Barbie is all about cosplay and performative bravado, but you really need to watch this to understand the mentality of Trump’s Attack on America.

Garrett Graff describes it as a “Gotham-like sizzle reel of the highlights of that raid — armed masked stormtroopers, heavy weapons, helicopters, and search lights, all set to a Hans Zimmer-like soundtrack.”

You can feel the bloodlust in every cinematic scene. The full-metal gear. The racing cars. The roar of the Black Hawks. The drawn guns aimed at their targets. Doors blasted open. The residents zip-tied and put into vans. The performative humiliation.

WTF is this? It is the pure engorged id of MAGA.

For Noem — and Trump, and Miller, and Hegseth, and Patel — the brutality is a made-for-tv movie. It’s entertainment. And they get off on the raw, naked will to power.

The law be damned. But make no mistake about it: They love this. They are proud of this. And they will keep doing it. And you all are paying for it.

The video glorifying this:

Another example of people sounding the alarm that shit is broken and needs to be fixed and nothing is done until people are killed. Far too many examples to be listed here.
Yep, kids in school etc!

A federal judge has temporarily restrained Trump’s federalization and deployment of Otegon national guard to Portland.

The court’s decision granting the temporary restraining order is not kind to Trump’s characterization of the situation.

So, pretty wild court action overnight.

Yesterday, following the court’s restraining of the federalizing of the Oregon guard for deployment to Portland, the government pivoted to instead ordering already-federalized California National Guard to Portland instead. Portland and California joined in emergency motion to the same federal judge.

Last night she held a 10 pm hearing - this on a Sunday! - and issued a second temporary restraining order on the basis that this act was essentially flouting her earlier one, as she had preliminarily found no legal basis for activating Guard to go to Portland instead the first place.

The judge’s written order enjoins the deployment of any federalized Guard in Oregon. She clearly has anticipated a next step where the feds attempt to deploy Guard federalized with state consent.

This is temporary, and expires in just a couple weeks. We’ll probably see fast court action in the substantive issues. The real legal questions in play here are around the President’s statutory authority to deploy the National Guard under a specific portion of federal law in specific circumstances, and whether the statutory preconditions existed at the time the decision was made.

Next up I suspect we see Texas NG sent to Chicago.

Lines are being drawn, tested, and flouted. Once again Trump is playing chicken with the courts.

Maybe the TX NG will be able to enjoy some Chicago style winter/snow brought in early for them.
