The more I re-watch it the greater I think that ad is. Or was. I'm very disappointed we stopped running it as soon as Trump through a hissy fit. We should have kept it running and weathered the storm that resulted from it. Let his supporters (continue to) see how unhinged he is and justify supporting it.

The ad is being used as a pretext. If an ad quoting Reagan that punctured Trump’s tissue-thin skin was all it took to derail a trade deal, then the talks weren’t genuine from their side anyway. Besides, they’ve already clarified that it was more about Canada being ‘difficult’, as discussed above. No real negotiation in good faith is so easily derailed as that.

It looks like a lot of people are trying to explain the ad in ways that support whatever their own beliefs are.

Like I just mentioned to Remius, I think the ad was great. Ford nailed it. Or whoever came up with the idea anyways. We should keep the ad going. I'd also run the ad in Canada for our 51st state brothers and sisters.

All prior rounds of tantrums tariffs have exempted CUSMA, so ‘10% on everything’ is far from ‘on everything’. And the ‘punishment’ narrative ultimately helps us when SCOTUS hears this.

I don't think SCOTUS will do jack all about this but I hope I'm wrong. The idea that this is an eye opener for them would speak to a lack of SA. If anything this is just additional evidence.

They were a presidential radio speech on the public domain and don’t require permission to use. Trump is demonstrably lying, as recklessly as he ever does, and the Reagan foundation is trying to curry favour by prostituting Reagan’s economic legacy for Trump. But they’re making The Gipper’s ghost say and do things he would never do or say.

I think the Reagan foundation tucked their tail between their legs and chose their own safety over Reagan's legacy. Weakness is a choice. If Trump loses the next election you (we) can expect the Reagan foundation to all of a sudden agree with the ads.

Yes, ongoing US tariffs hurt us as they hurt literally every other economy, including America’s. One person is responsible for that, and we’re trying to negotiate with a toddler who randomly throws his toys out of the stroller when it suits him. No political leader anywhere can fully control for that. Right now as a country we’re doing our best to ride out the storm. Lots of hope is in the Supreme Court right now, and for a change in tide at the midterms.

I disagree about 1 person being responsible in the sence that I hold everyone who voted for Trump (or any politician as it were) culpable for their actions. Americans put him in that seat.

Asshole teachers can still impart valuable lessons. That's what Trump is doing for Canadians.

Pay increase for the military. Improvements to border security.
(Maybe) addressing our broken government procurement process.
Realization we can't keep riding US coat tails.
Even the tariffs are teaching us lessons that we deserve. Lessons learned in blood and all that.

Meh…your woulda, coulda, shoulda serves no purpose. Besides nobody in their right mind could have foreseen before last Christmas that Trump would attempt to destroy the worlds trading and economic system a few months later.

It's good to debate, but not to inject junk. Trump was promising tariffs prior to election day 2024, which was prior to Christmas 2024. Add to that all the times he talked about tariffs during the preceding years, and the tariff-related policies he promised and executed leading up to the 2016 election and during his first term. So, years of that shit. Any marginally-informed person knew the risk; everyone in positions of authority could have started mitigation sooner and executed faster.

"They" knew and moved slowly, if at all. That's a marker of people with few ideas except "hope" that a threat doesn't materialize, followed by "hope" that it goes away by itself. That's fairly typical for politicians, and many have repeatedly demonstrated that there's no crisis too desperate that it should stop them from placing political interest ahead of everything else (up to and including COVID).

Canada could spend 10 percent of GDP and double the size of the Canadian Armed Forces and it wouldn't change the fact that militarily we are at their mercy.

But I don't see America as a military threat, I see them as a economic and societal threat.

If separatist groups started popping up and sowing discourse in Canada, who would you say was behind it? Previously? Russia. Now? Even bets it's washington.

If a country wanted to damage and hurt our economy, who would you think it was? Before? China. Now? It's the USA.

The USA is a "friend and ally" of Canada as much as any country can be to another.

Our beef with the USA is with a small minority which controls the WH, and a larger minority willing to reflexively support the first one. The sum is not a majority. Status quo is severely time-limited due to the frequency and fixed nature of US elections.

"The US is an enemy" is divisive rhetoric serving other interests, such as China. The people bleating it are, long-term, harming Canada more than Trump's Canadian supporters. Trump will soon be gone; China won't. Trump and his followers chart a haphazard course with pretty much no strategic guiding themes or focus; China does not. Its an open question of how much of the republican party is what faction, and how much they overlap, but at the end of the day, the leadership, executive and congress are either openly hostile or not opposing those who are openly hostile.

And if they are openly hostile, they are not friends, and can definitely be classified as enemies. Did every Russian vote for Putin? Does every Chinese support Xi Jinping? Is every North Korean supportive of Kim Jong Un?

Clearly not, but due to the actions and stances of the leadership of those countries, we view them as adversaries. The USA is no different.
