I can agree with your statement - it is useful but can be dangerous because of the bias one holds toward certain people and rank.Ex-military as President? Useful. They should know what it's like before they send men and women into harms way. Ex-military as MND, SecDef, etc? Dangerous. They tend not to understand what civilian control of the armed forces means in reality. And they are almost universally terrible at strategic management and resort to micromanaging.
JFK was a junior officer and by most accounts his Squadron CO was a dick, therefore senior officers should not be trusted. He certainly didn't care for the Joints Chiefs of Staff....or any advice from them.
