Trump administration 2024-2028

What an absolute blowout. Dems are cruising for 260 House seats. I saw nobody seriously suggesting remotely close to that number. 54-56 Senate seats. I’m blown away that Louisiana is not just in play but actually has a good chance of going Dem. That just wasn’t on the radar. Still too close to count in Alaska too.

Trump now (come January) gets nothing through Congress including Senate confirmations without a deal, and they have the power to choke off funding. The congressional investigations and subpoenas will be something else too. The administration’s in for a rough ride. Any bets on how long Hegseth lasts?

Florida is now the odd one out, being the only red state left along the east coast.

And even then just barely. A DSA candidate very nearly won a senate seat, losing by just 3 points. The Governorship was also really close.
I kick myself for being hopeful but it was closer than usual. I'm really tired of living in an idiot state.

This article summarizes up nicely what we, and the Europeans, and others, are up against.

How much of this can we control? How much of this should we control? How much of this will we end up controlling over the next few years?

And I would point out - I don't necessarily agree with the use of the word 'Trump', there should be no single country, be it the US, the UK, the EU, who has this much control over our day to day lives - no one - otherwise we are really still just a colony struggling with the decision of becoming a full country.

The next couple of years are going to be interesting 😎
Yup, the executive still has a lot of power. The Congressional power of the purse is going to be key to the next two years of U.S. federal politics. We can also expect to see congressional hearings and subpoena powers leveraged aggressively to pull back a lot of the curtains on the administration. I would expect a lot of defensive pardoning of various figures by Trump.

I think this calls for some perspective. Yes, Trump took some losses at the mid-term. How does that look with historical comparisons?
House and Senate seats respectively over last 20 years:

2006George W. Bush (R)-30 seats-6 seatsUnified Democratic Control
2010Barack Obama (D)-63 seats-6 seatsSplit Control (GOP wins House)
2014Barack Obama (D)-13 seats-9 seatsUnified Republican Control
2018Donald Trump (R)-41 seats+2 seatsSplit Control (Democrats wins House)
2022Joe Biden (D)-9 seats+1 seatSplit Control (GOP wins House)
2026Donald Trump (R)-25+ seats-7 seatsUnified Democratic Control

His losses look about average and as expected of any POTUS going into the mid-terms. Obama's 2010 losses were much worse and Biden's 2022 loss/gain is an outlier.

This is not really a grand departure from historical trends.
