The thing is, the US is one of the largest arms exporter in the world, and also relies heavily on all kinds of other exports, including software, cloud services, and all kinds of other high value products. This article summarizes up nicely what we, and the Europeans, and others, are up against.
How much of this can we control? How much of this should we control? How much of this will we end up controlling over the next few years?
And I would point out - I don't necessarily agree with the use of the word 'Trump', there should be no single country, be it the US, the UK, the EU, who has this much control over our day to day lives - no one - otherwise we are really still just a colony struggling with the decision of becoming a full country.
Trump Has His Finger on Canada’s Kill Switch
Patriotic defiance means little if Washington can shut off the systems we need
Flipping that kill switch would harm Canada for sure, but would also wipe out Silicon Valley, every major US defence firm and all kinds of other industries for generations as no one would ever trust them again. Microsoft, Apple, etc etc would all crater internationally, and the impact on stock prices would wipe out a lot of pension funds. It would be global financial suicide.
Canada and the EU are already developing our own satellite systems for this risk, as we saw the impact on Ukraine from access just being throttled, but that's just the tip of it, and this kind of thing would impact trillions of dollars worth of assets.
Trump's tariffs are already an act of self harm making US goods more expensive, but this would make them unusable and untrustworthy across the board.
