Hey there.
I‘ve been looking into the military for a long time now, and for quite a while wanted to join the US Army Rangers. I decided to not do that and join the Canadian Army since to be honest I‘m a Canadian Citizen and not an American and wouldn‘t want to abandon my country.

I want to go overseas (Preferably to A-Stan) and serve in a peacekeeping operation, and basically not be some REMF. How does one decide where he serves and such? I want to be Infantry you know.

I‘m a 15 year old guy who‘s physically fit and could easily meet the entry requirements for Basic. Should I look into the reserves?

Thanks.

P.S. Sorry if the post is unclear I got quite a few questions and wanna get my **** clear before I go to see a recruiter.

You‘re wayyyyyyyyyyyy too young...I think you can get in at 16 with parental consent.

16 for the reserve, 17 for reg forces, under the age of 18 you need parental consent.

No no no I realize that. Like I said. Unclear. Lemme start over here.

Question 1) When I turn 16 in 2 months can I just join the reserves or are there any other requirements?

2) If I join the reserves do I join regular at 18 if I wish and go through basic etc

3) I get a say in my MOS right?

4) Actually guess that‘s it for now.

I hope you know you need a visa or greencard to join the US Army.

I get a say in my MOS right?
You pretty much fill in 3 possible choices and they‘ll give you one according to their needs. And it‘s called MOC over here.

I have a direct family member who is American so I could get a Green Card if I stayed there for 6 months, however I will not be doing that.

If you are 15 you may apply, well not technically, but whatever. If you do your research on the DND sites you will find all the requirements, and what MOCs are. If you can meet the physicaly requirements, and dont go ape at the person interviewing you, you‘re pretty much good to go. As has already been said you get to choose three MOCs. However, if you apply directly to a unit you might not have a choice. For example if you apply to an Infantry Unit, you pretty much put down R031 and thats that. Once you turn 17 you may do a component transfer to the regular force. Keep in mind that you will have to redo all of your Qual. levels, unless you have a certain amount of time in Class A service.

Roger. So if I put down PPCLI or RCR or something for unit I‘ll prolly get 031?

No. A specific unit, for example, Lorne Scots is a INF unit. PPCLI and RCR are brigades.

PPCLI and RCR are not brigades.
I.E. PPCLI is a Regiment, which belongs to 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (CMBG). Kind of like the Lorne Scots are an infantry regiment, which belong to 32 CBG

Further, for the Regs, you won‘t be applying directly to a unit. You would select infantry as a trade, and can then put preference for which infantry regiment you want to join, but the Army will in the end decide where you go.

And I was just about to correct that... no point now.

Your best bet is to read up in the recruiting archive to find out what you need to join...

and its MOC not MOS

I live in Ontario, if I was to get posted to an infantry regement in Alberta. Do I have to pay to get there?

SCM77, you don‘t have to pay to get to your posting, you‘ll be sent to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu for basic training and then posted to the Battle School appropriate for your trade and final posting. The CF pays for all of your travel expenses and makes all the arrangements for you.

Wow, I rather fell out of the military beat - right now I am all lost, confused, tired, behind in studies, and God help me. Now I am thinking of Environmental Studies in university. I don‘t think R.M.C. offers that, but I will do some research t‘nite. Cheers.
