USS Porter and an oiler collided in the SOH. I wonder how the tanker looks.

Better than the Porter I'll bet.  Little things like that don't fare well against all the inertia of a tanker.

Unlikley they didn't have radar contact, possibly the weapons radar was looking elsewhere or object was ignored by combat as an ID merchantman. It would be interesting to read the chain of events that led to this, because there is always a chain. Weather, vis, traffic, training and likely the "chain of assumptions"
