Separation is a consequence of detention, subject to detention policy and facilities. To shine a light on the most extreme policy (zero-tolerance admission policies which produce large numbers of detentions of adults with children, and thus large numbers of separations) is to also shine it on the lesser manifestations. What follows is a political pig-wrestle among "explanatory" journalists and fact-checkers, which can't do much more damage to Trump but can damage other peoples' reputations and political prospects.

Considering how many children were basically trafficked across the border to improve adults refugee claim status. Something needs doing. The people pushing illegals across the border are quite ruthless.

Depends on what their aim is. If they want to take a shot at moving polls against Trump, they could release it before the election. If they want to shape discourse and influence the next administration so that the policies aren't repeated, it's self-defeating if Trump wins and carries a grudge (which he does sometimes).
