US Presidential Election 2024 - Trump vs Harris - Vote Hard with a Vengence

The whole idea is to make it too expensive for a manufacturer to deal with the tariff and to move their plants and processes back to the US. Then Texas won't have to worry about Mexico.šŸ˜‰
Please walk me through how that will solve the problem of goods and services already being too expensive in the US, which was one of the main threads that the GOP was pushing.

A tariff on things produced in Mexico that the US imports would result in one (or more) of three things:
  1. Mexico charging higher prices because they still want to be profitable
  2. The US moving those things back to be made in the US, which checks notes is not cheaper than Mexicoā€¦the reason why the manufacturing is there to begin with
  3. Mexico installing retaliatory tariffs on the US, especially since Mexico provides some of the parts that US industries need
Neither of those are good for the US consumers.

Add to that in a historically low US unemployment rate already, one assumes that there will be the American workers to do said jobs. Remember that if you take out immigration (legal or not), the US doesnā€™t have the required birth rate and the Boomers are aging out fast.

I'll wait and see the announcements/ plan before getting too crazy.
But as one of the recipients of said tariffs (Canada), itā€™s prudent to have ā€œbest case / worst caseā€ COAs laid out based on what he has said.

Itā€™s not a surprise that he is looking at tariffs for trading partners. He even announced it during his campaign. Companies need to plan on how to re-tool production lines, etc and are already taking note and shifting productionā€¦but not necessarily to the US.

The point of tariffs, in theory, is to incentivize US manufacturing by making imported goods comparatively more expensive to made-in-the-USA stuff. But hereā€™s the catch: Steve Madden isnā€™t moving its production to the United States. It said it will be sourcing its goods from Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil and some other countries.

In addition to his extra-steep proposed China tariff, Trump campaigned on tariffs of 10% to 20% on everything that comes into the United States. So Madden may be the first American company to move production out of China because of Trumpā€™s proposals ā€“ but it probably wonā€™t be the last. And Americans shouldnā€™t expect all that production to come back to the United States.

Will depend on what sort of exemptions get carved out.
Looks like some sectors arenā€™t waiting.

My gut feeling is that Trump's current tariffs fixation is the 2024 equivalent of "we're going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" - great red meat for the base despite being completely unrealistic, and will quietly be forgotten about with unfortunately little to no penalty amongst MAGA as keeping promises is clearly not a problem for them when it's Trump breaking the promises.

I certainly wouldnā€™t

Oh you're back! Wasn't sure for a moment there. Good. Looking forward to your commentary over the next few years.

Same with the deportations.

We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. But as Trump detractors, go ahead and continue to speculate if it works for you.

Why wait and see? Is going to do what he said or not?
Sorry, that crystal ball only seems available to anyone not supporting Trump. He doesn't have a hostile House and Senate to stymie his plans this time. So yeah, we'll have to see what happens.

Is Steve Madden (the company) a Trump detractor? I would think that they are pretty politically agnostic - just trying to turn a profit.

The reality is that once Trump won, his history of talking about imposing tariffs is going to make companies and countries reconsider some decisions. I would be shocked if every single country who trades with the US isnā€™t doing some form of ā€œspeculatingā€ right now.

And if weā€™re not to discuss or speculate on politics or other threads, why do those threads even exist? There are multitude of news channels to get the latest news.

Soā€¦back on topic:

Itā€™s been three days since the election (2 since the result). Some folks were predicting rioting by the Left if they lost.

They might be busy trying to get last minute medical procedures.

The rest are buying guns and getting ready for January.

Possibly, but they have real financial and political experts to listen to. People who likely know what they are talking about. I'd likely listen to them, whether I agree or not.
A Never Trumper with an axe to grind and nothing but an opinion, probably not so much.
Haven't you heard? The legacy media is in so much decline they should be in hospice. They are no longer relevant after their election predictions all fell flat.
Nobody is stopping you from discussing, but you need to find someone else to humour your speculation. Thereā€™s no shortage of like minded posters to agree with you.

So heā€™ll either be a liar that tricked his base or heā€™ll stick to his plan. Makes sense.
That would be your opinion. Everyone has one. If weā€™re going to be honest, I doubt you'll find any politician that was able to fulfill all their campaign promises. But I get that you would believe only Trump is an outlier. I doubt you'll ever be satisfied with anything he does.

It is. You have mentioned that everyone has opinion for years. Itā€™s in almost all your responses. Guess what? Itā€™s a forum where we discussā€¦OPINIONS.

No I donā€™t think heā€™s outlier. Iā€™ve never said so.

Absolutely politicians dont follow through. Glad you agree. So if he doesnā€™t do some of those things heā€™s said he would do weā€™ll both be happy.

Mostly untrue about satisfaction about him. Iā€™ll be satisfied if he backs Ukraine, Iā€™ll be satisfied if he carves out exemptions for Canada in his sweeping tariff plan. I care about how he (and it would be the same with Harris) will impact us here. Iā€™m team Canada before Iā€™m team ā€œinsert US political movement of your choiceā€. But I find it fascinating. Not everything he says and does is bad, but some of it is full on effing bonkers.

Last time I gave him full credit for his vaccine roll out (oh the horror for some as that must have created time space anomalies in their world view) and his work on prison sentence reform.

As to the rest? He has strong mandate from the people to deal with the border, deporting people and restructuring the US government and withdrawing from the world. They made that choice as is their right. But we can all discuss the potential impact that will have.

I get that as a member of MAGA that some of the discussion upsets you butā€¦

I like others enjoy and are interested in world events and politics and enjoy discussing it and your constant pontification about our opinions isnā€™t going to stop us.

Sorry, I'm not upset. I'm actually quite happy. The democrat got their asses handed to them by someone that outclassed them at every turn. Every prediction they made turned out wrong and the majority of the voters saw what a bunch of useless carpetbaggers they are. I'm happy that the Obama era flamed out and died a glorious, humiliating death. He didn't get his fourth term. I'm happy that we're seeing the demise of the MSM, done in by their own pompousness and manipulation. I especially love the way biden got the establishment back for the coup they perpetrated on him by ruining harris' run on purpose. Now all the ringleaders are pointing fingers at each other. And Hollywood, nobody is listening to them anymore. People finally realized how unimportant they are and ignorant of regular people they are. No, on the contrary, I'm enjoying it all and couldn't be happier.

I find most posters here knowledgeable and easy to discuss things with. Some others, not so much.

As far as my pontificating about your opinions? Too bad. It's my opinion and you don't have any say about how I see things, what I believe or what I post. You're under no obligation to read my posts, nor am I obligated to answer someone because they want me to. Especially when I can see at the outset that all they want is a pissing contest.
