ATLANTIC OCEAN (March 3, 2008) A NATO E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft flies over the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). George Washington is participating in Tailored Ships Training Availability and Final Evaluation Problem (TSTA/FEP) before a permanent homeport change in Yokosuka, Japan. The AWACS is used to provide airborne battle management, surveillance, and weapons control. This is the first time that an AWACS has done a low-approach fly-by over a U.S. naval vessel. Speaking of  the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) :

Sailor treated for burns after fire on carrier

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One sailor was treated for first-degree burns and 23 others for heat stress after a fire on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier burned for hours,
the Navy said Friday. There were no fatalities on the ship.

Thursday's fire on the USS George Washington in the Pacific Ocean off South America was classified as "serious," Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis said.
Smoke initially was detected in air-conditioning and refrigeration spaces before spreading to other areas, causing "extreme heat" in the ship, according to Davis.
He said it took several hours to contain and then extinguish the blaze.

The ship's nuclear propulsion system was not damaged, and the George Washington is continuing toward a scheduled port call in San Diego, California.

There is nothing like sunset at sea, nature puts on the best show anywhere.  I am being posted ashore and will really miss it.  :'(

And the night sky, especially in the South Pacific, ain't too bad either.

Cannot comment on the West Coast.  And the farthest south I have gone on this coast is to the Dutch Antilles just off the north coast of Venezuela.  At sea at night the sky can be fantastic.  On the Tanker you have lots of places you can go to observe the stars.  I keep telling myself I really should get some information on what I am looking at.  I feel kind of stupid only being able to identify Orion, Taurus and the Big and Little Dippers.  Just too lazy I guess....

What did surprise me though was Hayley's Comet.  Maybe I was expecting more, but it really did come as a disappointment overall.  Either that, or our ancestors scared easily.  Halebop or whatever the other one that came later was called looked better to the naked eye.
