Had me guessing for a second. 

As far as the article is concerned what a disgrace. If we start letting "fads" get a pass in the military we are in trouble. Express your view, just do it outside of the uniform and do not bring disgrace to the service.

Couldn't agree more Flavus.  If you are personally outraged by what is happening in your country, so be it.  But your personal opinion is just that - your personal opinion, and personal feelings.  It should not affect how you conduct yourself as a professional representative of that country.  The two need to be separated.


On a separate note, what concerns me is how quickly our neighbour to the south is falling apart.  Everything from the banking industry being out of control, to an unwinnable "war" in the Middle East that now spans several countries - with no clear objective to achieve to end military involvement - to tens of millions of illegal immigrants that have now settled in the US & started families, to racial tensions being high again, the real militarization of the police, mass shootings on a weekly basis. 

The US needs to cut the s**t, ignore the dumb talking heads that prevent progress, and really figure it's s**t out fast.  I think a member of the Navy openly refusing to salute the flag is just a small visual representation of bigger, deeper problems.

I suspect that she will either lose some pay and if it continues she will be put out.

A message directed at active-duty sailors and reserve personnel on active duty cites Navy Regulation 1205, which mandates that personnel in uniform must stand at attention and face the flag when the national anthem is played. It also notes that a Navy administrative message published in 2009 requires Navy active-duty personnel in civilian clothes to face the flag, stand at attention, and place their right hand over their heart.

"Additionally, Sailors receive training on the appropriate usage of social media, and must not use it to discredit the Naval Service, and should be reminded it could potentially be used as evidence against them," the guidance continues, a message apparently directed at the two sailors who published posts on Facebook about their protests.

Failure to comply with these regulations, the message said, is punishable under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and constitutes commission of a serious offense -- grounds for administrative separation from the service.

I guess sinced they repealed DADT  people have to find creative ways to get kicked out?

Wonderful that she's not saluting a flag but I wonder what activism she has done,  if any, to try and actually address what's going on.  Starting with the biggest perpetrator perhaps?

Activists dont fare well in the US military.Once they are given a lawful order to cease and they continue,they are in violation of the UCMJ.The ACLU wont be able to win should they intervene on the behalf of the protester.
