I am interested in the vehicle technician position. I recently spoke with a recruiter and they mentioned over 200 jobs were available across Canada. After hearing this information it discouraged me from going any further. Why are there so many openings? Is it not a good trade? Is the Forces.ca description not accurate? Is anyone currently in the Vehicle Tech position that could enlighten me on their work atmosphere?
How is being a vehicle tech in the army compare to civilian mechanics?

I feel like I have read almost every post about vehicle tech on this website and it has answered many of my questions, much appreciated. Most of the valuable info is over 10 years old; I am looking for more recent info. I have read a lot of positive things about joining so I am looking for some negatives. I want to know the worst so I can decide if I can commit 5 years.

Thank you for all your help and I look forward to your responses.

Im a gunner in an artillery regiment at the moment. Being kind of new in the regiment we often get sent as GD to help the tech working in the garage. Most of those who I have worked with are trying to get out of the trade or releasing because of the workload they are being put through. They dont have much downtime, their days are usually from 7h30 to 4h30 and they dont seem to finish early all that often and before most exercise they get their PT cut to make sure we have enough vehicle in working condition to get through the exercise. They often have to use old stuff to fix older stuff, maybe you can get some hindsight from actual tech but this is my point of view of the trade.

Thank you for the insight Jayjaycf. I would be very interested to hear from someone that is currently (or recently) been in the position. Especially someone who has worked in the civi side as well.
