My Dad was in a Guards Regiment, and I saw my share of square bashing as a youngun. That's just how it's done, the higher shriek of the executive, which I assume is what tickled your funny bone, carries farther and faster on a big parade square. I was amazed when I joined the Canadian Army that commands WEREN'T executed like that.
I've seen/heard drill called like that in the CF... In my unit actually. By our former RSM.
I don't find it all that strange or funny. And as Kat put it; it does carry more across a parade.
I must admit, it was a little odd at first, not being used to that method, but it is just as effective, if not more, than what 'we' do.
As for the video... I thought it was a fantastic display of proper British Guard foot drill... not really all that funny.
More prevalent in the guards and rifle regiments, it seems. You just kind of do it the way the guy who taught you did it, and it snowballs, kinda like that funky Patricia right dress, or the pilfered RCR halt.... I kid, I kid, save the knives for later... ;D
And yes RHFCPiper, I was very impressed with the drill. My co-worker who first showed the video to me was impressed too, you might know him, Rick used to be a piper with the Toronto Scottish, (well I don't know sometimes it just seems to me that you guys all know each other..)
Just what is that supposed to mean?!? What exactly do you mean by "you guys"? Pipers? Highlanders? Jeez... Kinda stereotypical much...
I see by your profile that you're from Toronto... Do you know my buddy Steve from Toronto? You guys all seem to know each other... ya know? All you Torontonians...
I just kidding... just givin' you a hard time.
As I said, I don't know Rick, but the piping world is pretty tight knit... Ya never know... I may have met him at some point... or not.
