Veteran suffers PTSD related demotion.....

CTV News Calgary has run a story about how the Corps of Commissionaires have laid off Veterans, and in some instances hired civilians to replace them.  In this case, a Veteran was laid off when he indicated that he had PTSD.  This story is a bone of contention with many former CAF and RCMP members and may become a larger story.

I think there has to be some form of public education on PTSD.

Nearly everyone knows about it, but few people have an inkling of what it really is. It would go a long way to preventing situations like this.

Easier said than done, for sure.

PTSD is not just a military thing, Police, firefighters, volunteer rescue types, nurses, doctors, ambulance attendants and possibly anyone who witnessed a horrific accident, especially involving children.

In fact, Alberta passed presumptive PTSD legislation for police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

Actually it's anyone, FULL STOP, that has had "exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence" (from the DSM-V) either by direct experience of the events, witnessing in person, learning of traumatic events occurring to direct family or close friends or by repeated/extreme exposure to aversive details of traumatic events.  The last one particularly applies to Emergency services workers, military, etc.

I've treated/referred my fare share of people for PTSD that were normal everyday Joes/Jills, not cops or paramedics or fire fighters or ex/serving soldiers.  Most major trauma units have a psychiatrist on call or actually working directly with the unit for just this reason.

I find it ironic that the Commissionaires, who I believe still have a high percentage of military/ex-military staff and leaders, would do something like this.
